Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The Atlantic digs into the Satanic Temple, the group that wants its own seven-foot tall Baphomet statue outside the Oklahoma state capitol: "The group purports to view Satan as 'the ultimate icon for the selfless revolt against tyranny, free and rational inquiry, and the responsible pursuit of happiness.' Its website doesn't directly reference Anton LaVey, the Chicago-born occultist who founded the Church of Satan in the 1960s and inspired a national 'Satanic Panic.' In fact, its canon section lists just one text: a 1914 book called Revolt of the Angels, which frames Satan as a theological metaphor meant to bolster the human power of free inquiry. When it comes to actual devil worship, [church spokesperson Douglas] Mesner has little faith. 'I think that idea is silly,' he said. 'I can't even conceive of that actually being the case.'"

From the article: "Mesner refuses to distinguish politics from religion, even though that separation seems to be the very cause his organization is championing in Oklahoma. 'To say your religion is completely separated from your politics is asinine,' Mesner said. 'To me, there's no way to disentangle the two and I think the way our philosophy works, it ties in even more so. Our political actions are our religion.'

"It seems that the only magic the Temple believes in is the magic of media attention."

If he has a beard, arched eyebrows and a big nose, the Jews might complain he is a medieval insinuation the devil was made to look Jewish and they would have a good point.
They had best make satan blonde, blue-eyed and white as snow as only then will the left appreciate how evil he is.

Guess there's no legitimate grounds to include your stupid statue then is there?

Why not erect a statue of Roy Cohn? He was a New Yorker and just as evil.

MY statue would be no more stupid than I am, Tor.

It's interesting to find that these are Satanists who don't believe in Satan, but merely use the poor bastard to further their political goals.

'cause Christians would never do the exact same thing, would they?

Of course some would, Harry, and do.

However, not many claim to be Christians but don't believe in Christ.

I was just interested that nothing I had heard in the original story about these folks implied they were not traditional Satanists.

Didn't know they were scientific Satanists; editing out the "unscientific".

Actually, other than the name, they are political activists, which I have no problem with.

Although the ACLU doesn't agree with anyone, them or the church, putting an "idol" of any kind on state property.

As I recall, God didn't think much of physical representations of religious figures, either, lol.

All those pedophile priests and their protectors claim to be Christians (most of them anyway)but it's hard to think they believe in Christ.

#8 | I think I used the term "not many" deliberately.

What do you think?

Human frailties are as much a part of the bible as ethics and morality. As a matter of fact, one of the ways scholars differentiate OT writings from other historical texts is that they are unambiguously hard on the morals of their heroes and main characters, something you don't find in most similar writings.

Didn't you know, Christ is the ultimate get out of jail free card. It's the excuse some Christians use to be as nasty as they wanna be at the same time they pass judgment on, and try to control, everyone who doesn't think as they want them to think and behave as they want them to behave.

Well, yes. And no.

God judges. No way to get around that. I've heard non-believers gripe that He judges and also complain that He never judges harshly enough. In this forum. On the same thread. By the same posters.

To you, perhaps. I'm guessing that the reaction of most creationists and Young-Earthers to Mr. Nye's words is similar to that one might encounter when explaining nuclear fusion to the original Lascaux cave painters, after first subjecting them to a trephination.

Satanists are trolls (in the internet sense of the word), pure and simple, and should be treated as such.

Lascaux is brilliant, masterful art. Perhaps Nye would also benefit from explanations.

You would think Jesus wouldn't necessitate the aide of trolls, him being godly with immense power and such.

God of the Gaps.

That's what I was trying to recall.

God of the Gaps. Science can't explain that observation? Only logical conclusion is that God did it. That was effective for a millennia, maybe longer. Can we move beyond it? Please, Mr. Ham? Can we move beyond the God of the Gaps theory?

No. I was positing that Mr. Nye could be lectured to by cavemen. Meaningfully lectured to.
