Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Coca-Cola aired a Super Bowl ad with "America the Beautiful" sung in numerous languages. It was sweet and forgettable -- there are many things not to like about Coke, but their harmless pandering to the idea that America is, among other things, a polyglot nation is not among them -- except to dumb, intolerant people who were mad about non-English languages being used in combination with America.

I care but I don't blame the victims of NAFTA be they Americans or Mexicans. I blame those who negotiated, voted for and signed NAFTA. I blame the President who told us "they're only coming here to do jobs Americans won't do." The 1% has made billions by displacing American workers and replacing them with cheaper illegal alien labor or just outsourcing to China. Sorry, I just don't blame Mexicans for trying to survive in this world. A large percentage of them came from family farms put out of business by cheap foreign grain flowing into Mexico because of NAFTA.

I hope you realize that the only thing preventing a massive intrusion of cheap unskilled labor into our economy -- amnesty is being pushed hard by your beloved president and your beloved Democratic Party -- is House Republicans and even they may end up caving.

Republicans oppose immigration reform not because they actually want to prevent illegal immigration, they like the cheaper labor of illegals and they don't want these workers to ever be able to vote. They are the one's who let them come in back during the housing bubble, they told us they were only coming here to do jobs Americans won't do.

I won't argue the point about looking for a better life, heck I'd do the same . In fact my grandparents did. My problem is that nobody feels the need to assimilate into our society. They have no need or desire to learn English . In the mean time we give driving test in @ 10 languages to accommodate them( one example). Employers want you to speak Spanish just to give directions to those who can't speak English. How much money does this coast our country to accommodate those? And for the ad to praise the diversity in America by using other languages just reinforces the fact to these people.

Of course the GOP has terrible motivations under-pinning this issue. The point is, so do the Democrats, which is a fact you always seem reluctant to admit.

Regardless, amnesty will screw the middle class and it's your party that is pushing hardest for it.

Last time I was in Mexico I picked up a paper that had full page ads, in Spanish, for jobs at Tyson chicken, etc. --- in Texas. No were in the add did it state you need papers or the ability to speak English in order to qualify for employment.

With that said, why don't you go piss and moan to Tyson about how the uneducated, non-English speakers have taken your job (as pathetic a job as that must have been).

"We are talking supply and demand."

I was talking supply and Demand back during the housing bubble when bush let all of the illegals into the country on purpose, when the U.S. Chamber of Commerce lobbied to prevent enforcement of border security, etc. It's too late to talk supply and demand after they are already here.

I think Jeffj and patron are being misunderstood.

They want them deported because what they really want is for the government to protect their low paying, non-inspiring, dead end, and no effort jobs from being taken by illiterate migrants.
Why, cause illiterate migrants are their direct competition for the lowest rung jobs they occupy.

"So it's all Bush's and the Republicans' fault?"

Can't blame it all on them but the border is much more secure now than it was under Bush, more deportations too, more enforcement of the law.

We could solve the problem so easily, just jail employers.

That will never happen – for the simple reason that Jeff and patron demonstrate so well.
Some are too stupid and or wrapped up in ideological purity tests to see exactly who is undermining their possibilities (i.e. businesses whose emphasis is making as much money as possible in the shortest amount of time regardless of societal wellbeing).

In other words, today's business cares more about profit than they do America or Americans.
And nothing will change just as long as they have willing foot soldiers like jefro and patrooty to carry the racist and bigotry petard...

Enclaves? Name them. name these enclaves where people are unwilling to learn English.

I think more English speakers is a direct threat against your way of life, (ignorant, easy, entitled, and boorish).
I think if every foreign speaker in America could speak fluent English tomorrow, the likes of you would be here promptly to complain how they are ruining your life, still.

Also in this area my spouse gets quite a few of spanish speaking people come to her store and they speak no English, sos again it is point, pantomime, etc.

Not "sounding" like me got a guy killed! A power plant I worked at hired a buch of Mexicans to clean the plant. Only one guy Sounded like me and sounded like them. All of a sudden some guy is yelling gibberish over the the plant phone. Four of us went searching the plant trying to find what was going on. On the 8th deck found the guy who could sound like us laid out on the grating. The guy with him spoke Spanish so he was useless to help, the guy died.Would the 15 min to find had made a difference who knows by the time someone needs CPR their dead anyway.

Oh nonsense. I live in a neighborhood full of Italians, Portugese and a smattering of Vietnamese. The first generation immigrants have little English skills, the second generation is fully bilingual and the third generation can't speak to their grandparents. Maybe you should realize that America isn't ( and will never again be)the Anglo-Protestant nation it was before the Irish, the Italians, the Germans, the Poles, the Russians etc., etc. showed up and were stiff-armed for being foreign and forced to stick to themselves. I'm guessing you don't support Colombus Day or Saint Paddy's Day or Chinese New Year.

Not like the Protestant/Catholic wedding where there was virtual barbed wire down the center of the church and whenever one side knelt, the other side stood. Now that was assimilation.

May be Coke's advertising agents just aren't that smart. Recall the ill timed release of the Polar Bear Can nobody wanted. Also consider Coke sells world-wide besides here in America.
Maybe the controversial commercial was Coke's way of showing Americans the brand new Happy Legal immigrants from all over the world singing praise to America out of shear joy of being welcomed into the home country of Coke-a-Cola. So new their arrival they haven't learned English yet.

Many who protested this ad are in fact immigrants, proud of their heritage but also proud that they were able assimilate into American society and call themselves US citizens.

Being an immigrant myself, I think the Coke ad is completely harmless and a non-issue. That being said, I have little respect for foreigners, or expats, who have lived in the US for several years and have not had the intelligence to at least learn the English language, the simplest and most important on the planet.
