Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

A sobering new study published by the Journal of Wine Economics finds that alcohol consumption in American states rises as the population's politics becomes more liberal. The study by Pavel Yakovlev and Walter P. Guessford of Duquesne University in Pennsylvania shows a direct correlation between political beliefs and the demand for alcohol. The study compares sales of alcoholic beverages against the political leanings of a state's members of Congress, as ranked by liberal organizations Americans for Democratic Action and the AFL-CIO Committee on Political Education.

I think this study could be bogus. It could be that conservatives that are forced to live in liberal states are drinking more so they can cope (no pun intended, maybe).

I think it's completely possible. After all - liberals actually have friends to drink with :P

For the record, once MJ is completely decriminalized, this study will have different results.

I disagree. I think a conservative mindset in many people leads to a predisposition to shun all intoxicants, be it alcohol or marijuana. It's a responsibility-self discipline type of thing. (Not saying many liberals don't also abstain, just that a conservative mind set seems to go more hand in hand with self abnegation.)

hmmm... I like both but consider myself conservative on most issues.

"I think a conservative mindset in many people leads to a predisposition to shun all intoxicants,"

I think a conservative mindset in many people leads to a predisposition to not abuse intoxicants....not abstain entirely.

And I don't mean conservative in a political sense but rather someone choosing to live their life within some boundries.

basically I'm referring to the 7 deadly sins.

Finally an explanation on how Obama got elected.

That's because liberals aren't weak-kneed limp wristed skirt-wearing poodle walkers, and can hold their liquor.

"The research reveals that states with more liberal representatives like Nevada tend to consume up to three times more alcohol per head than more politically conservative states like Arkansas and Utah:"

Gee, can you see any flaw in their thinking?

Eberly, that is basically what I am trying to say. A consersative meaning a person who chooses to live their life within some boundaries. A.K.A. self disciplined in regard to those 7 deadly sins.

I would bet pot smoking goes up when a state becomes more conservative.
I mean, the loyal opposition has to do something to relax and endure.

Liberals like to have fun and are open about it. Republicans lie and hide it because it's a sin to have fun.

I don't think it's about hardcore libs drinking more, it's about hardcore repubs drinking less.

Those bible thumpers think god cares a whole lot about what they drink, eat, and where they put their wee-wee's.

I utah alone, they make it as hard as possible to get a drink. And if you get a beer, you're gonna need two, because the book-of-mormon-thumpers passed regulations to limit the amount of alcohol in your beer.

It's not enough for them to abstain from alcohol, they want to make YOU abstain as well. Because, you know, freedom.

That's because in conservative states there's 2 types of people - those that don't drink and think Jesus made grape juice at the wedding in the bible and those that drink 'shine...

The data on this is a little old but there's a lot more "YOU MUST DO AS WE SAY" dry counties in conservative areas. edgeofrandom.blogspot.com

Yeah like Betty Ford,... the one who opened a spin dry center, Rush Limbaugh, Trey Radel, Mike Crapo, Don Dwyer, Ulyses S Grant, Tom Slade... just to name a few notable conservatron drunks. Yeah real responsible lot... self discipline and all that.

Remember when Bush was running for president the first time? He was marketed as a regular kind of guy... the kind of guy you could have a beer with. Not saying that that means republiclowns are drunk .. but kind of stupid since Bush was a reformed drunk teetotaler. Mixing an alcoholic beverage and stupid. Any surprise the clowns wrecked the economy?

And then there's Joe Six Pack... you saw him.. they weren't talking about his abdomen.

Seriously every time the clown brigade likes to prattle on about their personal responsibility crap they get outed... Like William Bennett writing a book titled "Where's the Outrage" about the lack of morality sweeping the nation... then it revealed that he has a penchant for dropping the equivalent of a teachers salary in one evenings play time at a slot machine. It wasn't a one time event. His wife found out about it from the news.

And of course there is Noot.. the poster boy of republiclown family values.

Any Red-state vs blue-state analysis is going to be horribly flawed due to possibly flawed assumptions.

What if 90% of the alcohol consumption in one of these drunken blue states occurred within a district that is 90% red?

This is along the same lines as 'Red states draw more federal welfare than blue states'.

Of course they drink more, which answers the question "how do those hypocritical motherfroggers sleep at night?"

This shouldn't surprise anyone. The next study should be "why do they drink more"? They should look at the probability that lefties turn to the mind numbing agents when depression sets in because of the error of their decisions and beliefs. It becomes unbearable and instead of admission they turn to the devil's drink. It certainly is a sad thing to behold.
