China's Jade Rabbit Moon rover is in trouble after experiencing a "mechanical control abnormality", state media report. The Moon exploration vehicle ran into problems due to the moon's "complicated lunar surface environment." The rover landed in December as part of China's Chang'e-3 mission - the first "soft" landing on the Moon since 1976.

I'm surprised they said so. At this point, no matter what they say, I'll be 90% sure it's lies.

"The malfunctioning rover presents the first public mishap China's ambitious space programme has experienced in years, following several successful manned space flights..."

Much like the space programs in the '60s, we didn't see much bad press unless it was blatantly obvious.

Hopefully they can keep it working so we can get a new look at the moon from up close.

Maybe our deathstar on the dark side of the moon had to do it in before it got seen?

If you think that's bad, the Iranians are trying to figure out how to train their space monkey to steer an RC dune buggy with a Go-PRO duct-taped to the top.

I support China investing in space exploration. Everybody benefits from the discoveries. Also, as NASA has proven over and over again, nothing leads to technological breakthroughs like addressing the new and prior unthoughtful challenges of outer space.

"mechanical control abnormality" is the toned down version of what the engineers initially reported: "---. Tis don't wok"

You'd have to be pretty sheltered to think that goofing on the Chinese is "white humor".

Anyway, my guess would be that the rover was damaged due to wear caused by poor driving.

I hear it's actually a software problem. I believe the developer was some company named CGI Federal.

That's probably why they're having problems. It was a part of Obama's "Hop'e and Chang'e" mission.

If it's an RC (remote control) dune buggy, why would you need a non-human to steer it?

Having downloaded all of NASA's digital library, the Chinese have achieved more for less.

"Having downloaded all of NASA's digital library, the Chinese have achieved more for less."

The implication is he read all he downloaded. Everyone get impressed.
But having downloaded as many records from Los Alamos as they could, the Chinese certainly did get more for less in that respect.
