Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, January 24, 2014

Attorney General Eric Holder says the U.S. "would engage in conversation" about a resolution with Edward Snowden if the former government contractor accepted responsibility for leaking government secrets but said granting clemency "would be going too far." A CBS News poll released Wednesday found that 61 percent of Americans -- including clear majorities of Republicans, Democrats and independents alike -- believe that Snowden should stand trial in the U.S. Just 23 percent of Americans support some sort of amnesty for Snowden.

That's the same 23 percent who think that the rest of the electorate, wrong as they may be on issues, doesn't matter in elections or policy decisions, and that a progressive President should ignore them.

There's a word for that attitude, I just can't think of what is....

77% want Snowden tried? That's all of the conservatives, all of the independents, and almost half the liberals.

I think that the mix actually breaks down into something like two-thirds of the liberals, two-thirds of the conservatives, and two-thirds of the independents.

I wonder if that same 23 percent had their identity stolen and their savings depleted, but the perp gave the money to charity.... I wonder if they would want him to at least go to trial?

Looks like he will.

In an online chat Thursday, Snowden said that returning to the U.S. "is the best resolution for all parties," but "it's unfortunately not possible in the face of current whistle-blower protection laws."
As long as he faces years of solitary confinement before trial like Manning or its civilian equivalent "Special Administrative Measures" his best advice is to stay where he there. Any lawyer that leads him down the primrose path of return to the US under current circumstances commits malpractice.

Okay, seriosuly, I'm getting tired of that.

that's not the only thing he did. He took TONS of secret documents with him. He said so himself. he did not carefully choose evidence of excess, he backed the truck up to the dock and loaded as much crap onto it as possible, metaphorically speaking, before heading across the border.

What he did is the equivalent to robbing a bank because some of the money was drug money.

People need to stop holding him up as a selfless hero. He is nothing more than a very clumsy amateur wannabe espionage agent claiming a public justification just as thinly veiled as that of a software pirate.

I think we are ultimately going to find out he was compromised long ago, got double-timed and the only reason we know his name at all is because he tried a BS excuse to cover his butt. And... to an extent, it worked. Nobody's going to vanish Edward Snowden now.

not for a few years, at any rate.

I agree with this. Good post.

The amount of energy some people are expending making Snowden not responsible for, well, virtually everything that has or is happening in his young life is....Interesting.

Its always someone else's fault. Eddie doesn't exist save as an abstraction continually buffeted by the evilness of other people.

Its almost as if Eddie doesn't really have an existence at all to call his own. You've pretty much made him into a meat puppet, though likely a pretty rich one by the end of this year.

The reason that the sheeple misunderstand snowden is because they you have been propagandized into believing that a patriot is a mass murdering yes man for the state. i.e. have never witnessed it before.

Just as most of you don't know what a real liberal is because the fascist media calls the 'democratic party' by that misnomer.

What you think you understand is a public image. Like a majority of such images, Snowden's is controlled and superficial, intended for his benefit.

Snowden will eventually hire an actual publicist, to go with his personalized media outlets, if he hasn't already got one. He already has what appears to be a legal staff.

Someone upthread described Snowden as being a spy, but a poor one. I agree with that. But the man does understand a lot about human psychology, to unfortunately include yours.

Snowden has a fan base for many of the same reasons as does Miley Cyrus. Lihe Cyrus, he's getting quite a lot for himself by sticking his tongue out at us.

There is one party in america: the property party.

The two wings exist to create the illusion of a republican form of government.

It's a fascist plutocracy. i.e. they both report to the same fascisti.

Eddie's character and motivations are part of the story, whether you like it or not. As long as what is hypothesized concerning his character and motivations you are fine with it, as long as it amounts to praise.

Sorry, you Old Cheerleader you. No one is ever really goinbg to know what Eddie did or who Eddie really is until he comes back and lets himself get examined by persons others than his fan base.

I was watching the Godfather on TV the other night. There is a scene where consigliere Tom Hagen goes to confront powerful overconfident movie mogul Jack Woltz out at his palatial estate. Jack Woltz has been refusing to give the Godfather's godson Johnny a key role in a big movie that will make him a star. Apparently Johnny had run off with one of Woltz's beautiful young actresses in whom he had invested a lot of money. After oozing the charm and trying to act like a reasonable business man, Jack Woltz finally blows up. He explains to Tom Hagen that he will NEVER give Johnny that role. Woltz explains that he is a very powerful influential and respected. And the reason he will never give Johnny that role is that Johnny made him look ridiculous. And a man in his position can not look ridiculous.

That's what Snowden did to the NSA. And they hate him for it. And they will never forgive him. He showed to the world what the NSA really is.
