The ACA is the only real attempt made to fix what was quickly becoming the most serious problem with our economy. Health care costs have been skyrocketing for years, in some cases at five or ten times the rate of inflation! Health care costs were eating away at our economy. For every dollar spent on health insurance, that's a dollar not spent on a house or a car! Those costs would have eventually broken our economy!
The ACA is a Republican law, well tested through the experience in MA and was the only compromise that was going to get through the 60 vote Senate. If the Dems had had 60 solid (non-blue dog) senate votes, we might have at least gotten a public option. Sadly that was not the case, and the ACA was the best we could get. The ACA will help to lower the costs associated with free riders (free riders will still exist, but in MUCH lower numbers). Cost containment measures in the law will help to slow the rise of health care costs and we should see fewer people going bankrupt due to medical expenses. It's a far from perfect law, and it will be improved over time (just as SS and Medicare were), however, this hostage taking by the Teahadists is insane. The President and Harry Reid are right, you do not negotiate with terrorists. The Rethugs have proven that they CANNOT be trusted to be honest brokers in negotiations!
Even after Shurb's mistake in Iraq became unpopular with the American public, the Dem's did not shut down the government over the funding for that military adventure. I know Dems talked at times about defunding the war, but they never did it. They never held a gun to Shrub's head in an effort to end the war. Now answer me this, of those two policies, the ACA and the mistake in Iraq, which SHOULD have been shut down? Which one resulted in the loss of billions of American dollars, thousands of American lives and America's standing in the world? I'll give you a hint, it was NOT Obamacare!
MW, I've been here for awhile. I know you're smarter than this, but the reason the Dems a pushing the term ACA as opposed to "Obamacare" is because ACA polls about 15 points higher than "Obamacare." Sadly the right has done a better job at messaging on this subject. They've told so many lies about "Obamacare" that many people believe it's truly evil. In some polls, a majority of people have a positive opinion of the ACA, and a negative opinion of "Obamacare." ---------- are also lying about the public's opinion of the ACA. If you break down the poll numbers of people with a negative opinion of "Obamacare," you will find of course the solid 30 percent right wing vote who hate it because that's what Faux and Rush tell them to do, another 10 percent (moderates) who dislike it because they heard bad things about it, and about 15 percent who dislike it because they wanted the law to be more left wing like Single Payer, or at least to include a Public Option. That final 15 percent sure as hell doesn't want the government shut down over this! Actually ALL the polls I've seen have said that the public does not want the government shut down over the ACA. Sad that Rethugs are so divorced from the will of the people! May they pay dearly at the polls!
