Senate negotiations on revamping the immigration system are stalled over wages for future low-skilled foreign workers such as construction laborers, cooks, janitors and hotel maids, sources familiar with the talks said on Friday. According to one source who asked not to be identified, the eight senators involved in the discussions had tentatively agreed on a plan to govern wage levels for low-skilled foreigners who would be given visas to work in the U.S. temporarily.

Randel Johnson, a senior vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Washington's largest business lobby, said "unions have jeopardized the entire immigration reform effort...because of their refusal to take a responsible stance on a small temporary worker program."

Organized labor had a similarly angry characterization of the status of talks. "There is an uncomprehending level of anger. We have conceded on so many different grounds. They (Republicans) want to pave the path to citizenship with poverty," said Jeff Hauser, a spokesman with the AFL-CIO.

So the dispute is because Republicans want to pay foreigners less?

All I know is they should pay them more then the democratic entitlement nation sitting on their sorry rearends not taking these jobs since they're "beneath them".

They should get at least minimum wage, or whatever they can negotiate with the employers that's above that. I don't know why this should even be an issue.

Because they don't want foreigners being brought in to take American jobs. Makes sense to me.

And if its cheap enough, it might be worth replacing your American workers getting $8 an hour with foreigners making $5 an hour.

"refusal to take a responsible stance on a small temporary worker program."

That's code for "we want to use the immigrants to work for slave wages and hate the unions for not accepting pay of this kind."

Translation: "If 25 cents an hour is good enough for them at home, 26 cents an hour is good enough for them here. What's next, no death squads to keep the workers in their place? That's just socialist!"

And they should let them have more than 2 teeth, indoor plumbing, forbid them from screwing their sisters and not have more than 2 pickups up on blocks in front of their single-wides, like the Republican entitlement nation demands?

How much to pay immigrants? Well let's see Alien Liability for Social Security and Medicare Taxes of Foreign Teachers, Foreign Researchers, and Other Foreign Professionals show that they must pay taxes. Their perspective employer should pay them what the business owner determines.

Now on the other hand I suspect the low skilled illegals pay nothing at all in taxes - zip - notta - zilch. I would also wager to say that they suck up a vast amount of Federal funds meant for our own sovereign Americans in need. So - I would force businesses whom violate Federal Law, by hiring these folks, to pay a mandatory annual fee (not fine) of 100,000.00 dollars per person and that they pay them no more than 1/2 of the Federal Minimum wage minus their "fair share". I believe the minimum wage is $7.25 per hour so that would be about 3.63 per hour. Now - to make it fair to all the other Americans (who actually work and pay taxes) we must give our illegal alien friends a true taste of Obamanomics - we need to back-out their "fair share" of earned income so the government can disperse it to the Americans "they" deem in need. So - The total tax percentage paid by the average US citizen in 2009 is about 58%. Therefor $3.63 - 58% would be about $1.52 per hour (tops).

Pay temporary workers the same as anybody, minus a carbon tax to make up for the added CO2 footprint.

Example, if the prevailing wage is $9.00 per hour. The temporary workers base rate is also $9.00 per hour - $2.00 per hour "temporary worker carbon tax"; for a net pay of $7.00 per hour.

At least this explains the immigration flip-flop by the "conservatives" like Randy Paul. Their corporate masters have figured out how to use immigration to screw working Americans even more.

Wrong right from the first thought. The employer takes the taxes before they're even paid.

Your comment makes me wonder if you've ever held a job. Have you?

Welcome everyone as tourists. But, no more work visas. This must stop.

Why is this even a debate? If they're here legally pay them a legal wage. Anything higher should be up to the employer.

A good number of them work under false Social Security numbers and they pay their taxes in to the government the same as everyone else. The only difference is they can't request tax refunds, child care credits, or ever retire with Social Security benefits. Thus they actually pay in quite a bit with no hope of getting any of it back.
The rest of your idea about paying them half of the minimum wage, simply disgusting.

You know what's going to be funny? Once we allow undocumented workers legal status, all this "they do work Americans won't do or for a price Americans won't do it for" garbage is going to be over. Because the first thing they'll do once they don't have to worry about the fear of deportation is form unions and protest their working conditions fiercely as they're already largely organized due to the nature of their residency status and the requirements that places on them. Politicians and partisans on both side of the aisle are going to soil their panties when that happens.

"A good number of them work under false Social Security numbers and they pay their taxes in to the government the same as everyone else."

This is half true. There is a whole underground network of people sharing real SSN's with those who need them as a condition of their employment. Every restaurant kitchen I've ever worked in was staffed by people who worked under real SSN's. A lot of them had more than one so that they could work OT in order not to attract attention when the record showed a legal resident working more than 16 hours a day all year long.

"Every restaurant kitchen I've ever worked in..." should read "Kitchens of every restaurant I've ever worked at..."

I was a FOH guy. Better money and you don't come home smelling quite as bad.

What the f*** does this have to do with immigrants? Nothing. Stop slandering immigrants with this garbage, or GTFO.

so, immigrants should get less? that's wrong.

"This is half true."

You say it is half true and then proceed to show that it is actually doubly true.

I took "false" to mean fake. In my anecdote the SSN's were note fake.

" In my anecdote the SSN's were note fake."

Of course not, they can't be fake because the federal government would recognize the scam too easily. I wonder though, do the people who's numbers are used get to claim the tax refunds? Do they even know about the additional taxes being paid, how would it effect their Social Security?

"Of course..."

Things that occurred to me after the fact. As far as I know, yes, if they know the person whose SSN they are using they get a percentage of any refunds due. Not all know the owner of their SSN personally though. And as far as retirement benefits go, the owner of the SSN gets all that. Oldies are more likely to share their numbers as they are often working fewer hours and are less likely to draw an audit.

Yeah... it's the job of Congress to decide how much everyone is to be paid.

What amendment is that? I forget.

#26 | Posted by sames1 at 2013-03-25 12:13 PM | Reply | Flag:

So, it would be in my best interest to get as many illegals to use my SS number as possible?
