"Well-being is important because of the hypothesis that it leads to good outcomes," Newport said. "If your citizens have high well-being, they're more likely to be better citizens, engage in better behaviors and make things better all the way around. It's a positive goal for those that look at what we ought to emphasize in society."

Mayor Bloomberg couldn't have said it better himself.

There's kind of a Stockholm Syndrome thing going on with people from the South. The ferocity of their pride precludes them seeing they have it worse than just about anyone else in America. This message is reinforced by the New Country music they can't stop listening to. "I've got shoes beneath my feet and that's good enough for me," for example.
