Bo Jiang, a researcher at NASA's Langley Research Center, was arrested by the FBI Saturday night on a plane as it pulled away from the gate at Dulles International Airport bound for China. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.), whose district includes the NASA research facility, accused Jiang of being a "Chinese spy. Wolf says he spoke out after being contacted by NASA whistleblowers who claim Jiang and other Chinese nationals have traveled to China with laptops containing NASA research work.

What did we think would happen? We hire the wolf and put him to work in the hen house. Anyone else see this as stupid?

Anyone who thinks we can find enough Americans to do these jobs is pitifully ignorant. These scientists are over worked and underpaid. It's the intellectual crop-picker. The difference being that it takes over a decade to make a capable scientist.

Agreed Kliffered...

What a stupid statement. There are plenty of engineers. It was stupid to put a chinese national in that sensitive of a position. It's obvious they would still have loyalty to their mother nation.

To me, it's what's going on with immigration. If we are going to put people from other nations in jobs like this, we have to make sure they are loyal to the United States and not the craphole they left. It's as the bible says, you cant be loyal to two masters.

It's like hiring Libyans to guard the consulate in Bengazi.

There's a reason behind the saying "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."

Why didn't NASA keep a closer eye on this guy? Or more like it, why did they hire him at all? It's long been known that China is notorious in demanding all its Chinese citizens abroad spy and report back on anything which might be of interest to the Chinese government.

also, i get background checked, as anyone, just to get a door card in a bank building.

i don't know why having a full background check is too much to ask for when hiring for frakkin nasa.

Wait. China is our enemy now? I thought they were just competitors.

Man it is hard to keep up with who the military industrial complex wants us to attack.

The cat's already out of the bag. Yang Enterprizes, a software comapny owned by a Chinese woman, has a maintenance contract with NASA. According to Clint Curtis, Yang has already downloaded all of NASA's computer files. One thing is for sure, Ms. Yang's brother was ordered to leave the country on suspicion of espionage.

"The Capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will hang them." - Vladimir Ilyich Lenin

This quote is apt, considering how the tech sector in the US has been devastated by a combination of greedy American CEOs and Wall St. money men, all stepping over themselves to get their hands on cheap Chinese labor and the mirage of the enormous Chinese market.

NASA does do some classified work however, the vast majority of their work is not classified.

NASA policy on communication:

Scientific and technical information from or about Agency programs and projects will be accurate and unfiltered.

(b) Consistent with NASA statutory responsibility, NASA will "provide for the widest practicable and appropriate dissemination of information concerning its activities and the results thereof." (c) To ensure timely release of information, NASA will endeavor to ensure cooperation and coordination among the Agency's scientific, engineering, and public affairs communities.

(d) In keeping with the desire for a culture of openness, NASA employees may, consistent with this policy, speak to the press and the public about their work.

Firing squad. Best way to send a message. They should have done it with all the spies that have sold secrets to the Chinese and Russians.

This is what happens when you let your educational system go down the drain so far that the only people qualified to work in those positions are foreign nationals who where educated in your top universities with their education paid for by their government...

Roy, As you said they do secret work and there are federal laws regarding a lot of this. They obviously will supersede the NASA policies; but (e) pretty much covers that.

I might also add that on things like item (d); they won't be allowed to speak to the press or public with out a handler present if it is even remotely controversial. That is an Obama White House policy that applies to all scientist working for the government...

Then which ardent NAZI should have started NASA's rocket program?

Unless they have hard evidence that this guy hacked into or otherwise obtained information he was not allowed to have access to, this is going to backfire and make NASA and the FBI look extremely petty and stupid and (probably) racist.
