Meet The Chicago Guy Who Registered Popefrancis.com Three Years Ago

The domain name popefrancis.com is owned by a Chicago lawyer who registered the address nearly three years ago, but who today declined to answer questions about his apparent prescience (or luck).

Is it to late to register "Francis the Talking Pope"?

This pope will give new meaning to the phrase "lighten up, Francis".

Chicago Guy Who Registered Popefrancis.com Three Years Ago

Something's fishy here. What are the odds some guy in Chicago knew in 2010 that the previous Pope would be resigning within 3 years and the new Pope would take the unlikely name of "Francis." A zillion to one.

It comes out to cost vs possible return. Ic costs very little to register a domain name, but if you get one that suddenly gets hot, you can make a bunch of cash. I doubt "Francis" was the only name he protected. As a lawyer, he could probably protect a couple of hundred names if he wanted.

The new Pope is 76 years old, so it wouldn't be too surprising if he isn't there for very long, and it could be that this same lawyer has the next new Pope's name already under a domain name.

All you said there makes total sense, Buffalo_Bob. The guy admitted to having 40 other domain names registered and who knows how many other names he wouldn't admit to having. He just hit the jackpot this time with the name "Popefrancis."

And, like you stated, for all we know he could have a roster of a couple hundred "most likely" Pope names sitting on the back burner waiting for the current Pope to pass on -- or, in the last instance, to resign -- and a new one to be elected. None of the Popes so far have exactly been spring chickens so this guy will probably get another chance or two to score on more Pope domain names.

Actually, I'd personally like to register "PopeSquatter.com" myself since it seems the sport of grabbing a new Pope's personal domain name has become quite popular. lol
