Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, March 17, 2013

Two teenage boys were convicted Sunday in an Ohio rape case that gained worldwide attention because of -- and through -- the use of social media. Trent Mays, 17, and Ma'lik Richmond, 16, were found guilty of raping an allegedly drunk 16-year-old girl. Both were tried as juveniles. "Human compassion is not taught by a teacher, a coach or a parent. It is a God-given gift instilled in all of us," the victim's mother said after court was adjourned. "You displayed not only a lack of this compassion, but a lack of any moral code."

"Throughout this trial, the two defendants and a parade of friends who wound up mostly testifying against the defendants, expressed little understanding of rape – let alone common decency or respect for women. Despite the conviction, the defendants likely don't view themselves as rapists, at least not the classic sense of a man hiding in the shadows."

"...this night, witnesses testified over and over, wasn't strikingly different than any other night in the life of a Big Red football player."

I can understand how these kids "expressed little understanding of rape"--their attitudes/actions/lack of actions just reflect a wider problem in our society and it's the attitude of lack of respect for their fellow man/woman. It's been fostered over the years by a general breakdown of any mores except those pushed by the left agenda which doesn't speak to mores but a narrow political agenda And that narrow political agenda has no respect for the legitimate views of the other side.

Because until it made national news, nobody was being charged with rape.

#4 - Why is it "news"? Because market research probably tells how much time should be spent on each story. I assume you understand that commercial news outlets first priority is not delivering news. Their top priority is to maximize profit. It's easier and less expensive to run this story over and over than it is to get out of the studio and research more important but less sensational stories. It's emotionally charged so they can find some idiots to come in and say extreme things about it. It's candy for their viewers.

You don't think it's news when the local football team rapes a girl and local authorities don't refer the matter to the DA?

#9 | Posted by snoofy at 2013-03-17 07:04 PM | Reply | Flag:

Quite a difference between face-painting a drunk vs raping their limp corps. They're lucky the girl's father or brother wasn't nearby or they'd be dead.

Watched the sentencing of those two football players on tonight's news. One guy received 2 years at a youth correctional institute and the other guy received one year. Both boys cried and apologized at the hearing so maybe there's a lesson learned.

In answer to your question, a lot of emphasis was placed on the power of "social media" (youtube video tape) as being one of the major factors why this particular case gathered so much outside attention.

The widely-seen video of those two football players carrying a drunk and passed out 16 year old girl into a room to rape her -- along with all crude comments made some of their buddies accompanying the video -- outraged many people. Especially watchful were some women's groups who wanted to make sure these two local "football heroes" didn't just get away with a slap on the wrist. Unfortunately, in some smaller towns their top high school football players can do no wrong.

Something you would expect in Pakistan. Round football though.

A legit question...For a legitimate rape.

She will be legitimately raped over and over again in the media.

Poor matsy, so bedeviled by his own confused mores that he can't deal with reality. Righties have traditionally been supportive of rapists. John McCain and his ape rape story comes to mind, as does the old saying, "a woman can't get raped because she can run faster with her skirt up than a man can with his pants down" and worship of jocks. And let's not forget the whole "legitimate rape" debacle.

In general, the right has denigrated women (look at McConnel's insults about Hillary) and objectified them (Palin buying into it with her "rack" joke)while considering rape a boys will be boys thing (see Strom Thurmond).

Rape has been going on forever. It's just that them darn lefties are opposed to it and are getting women to speak out about it.

Now, repeat after me, " get off my lawn you young punks and I'm going to Denny's for the early bird special and I don't want to hear any of that Elvis the Pelvis racket". Feel better?

I not aware of "the left" teaching that putting your fingers inside a passed-out girl [...] isn't rape.

But that's what these kids thought.

We need to get the ACLU involved, these boys were boy scouts, now they are being treated like criminals that did something wrong. It's not fair (we don't give a shyt about the victim)

Is there a lesson in this for the girl? No one is asking that question...

#21 | Posted by snoofy at 2013-03-19 01:05 AM | Reply | Flag:

The lesson is: Don't drink around jocks, because quite a few of them are sociopaths from being put on a pedestal;(by their parents, the school, and society) They will harm you for fun and usually get away with it. That goes for High School and College.

If it hadn't been for their breathtaking arrogance by putting this stuff on youtube, these boys wouldn't have even gotten the wrist slap they did. These two are ANIMALS raped a girl that was UNCONSCIOUS and then LAUGHED AND BRAGGED ABOUT IT. I'm glad these two pukes will be registered sex offenders forever.

The possibilities are literally infinite. Seems like a waste of time to speculate when we know what did happen.

Why? Why is it a waste of time to speculate that if she hadnt gotten drunk, she probably wouldnt have gotten raped?

yea, yea, we know what the boys did was wrong, fry them, sure. But why cant we turn an eye toward the victim without addressing her and showing her where she was wrong?

#26 | Posted by boaz at 2013-03-19 10:20 AM | Reply | Flag:

#26...What are you talking about? The girl did not deserve to be raped, regardless of her condition. These boys got what they deserved; prison time, and a criminal record. Good luck finding work, boys.

She's already suffered negative consequences in disproportion to the mistake of drinking to much. I'd think going through what she's gone through would teach her whatever lesson she's going to learn without your "I told you so". Sheesh.

Kind of weird/a little sick that you just "yeah yeah" punishing the rapists but have a boner for rubbing the girl's nose in it after she's already suffered the consequences of her mistake and then some.

#30 | Posted by Sully at 2013-03-19 12:22 PM | Reply | Flag:

The white kid should have been given a reprimand and the black kid should have gotten the book thrown at him.

That judge must be new. Who gives a longer sentence to the white guy? I think he should be investigated.

As for the girl, she obviously wasn't aware that drinking to that level isn't a good idea unless she is amongst good company. She learned that lesson in an unbelievably brutal way, and will carry that with her for the rest of her life.

Please stop trying to silence my opinion. First thing liberals do is try to silence someone in this type of discussion by saying something outragous like I think she deserved it. I didnt say she deserved it. There is a difference. I just said if she wasnt drunk, she probably wouldnt have gotten raped. There is truth to that. Why cant you admit it?

No, it isnt "weird". They were punished. Done. That's why I yeah yeahed it. We knew that would happen. Justice was served.

She doesn't remember any of it. So what makes you say she did something wrong?

The wrong thing she did was what, exactly? Passing out and expecting not to get raped?

The problem isn't with the girl, it's with a world that rapes passed-out girls.

Do you rape people in their sleep much? If you see a passed-out girl do you think maybe you should rape them? No? Good for you. Now why isn't the world like that?
