Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The Pentagon announced Friday that it would strengthen the country's defenses against a possible attack by nuclear-equipped North Korea, fielding additional missile systems to protect the West Coast at a time of growing concern about the Stalinist regime. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said he would add 14 missile interceptors in Alaska, a roughly 50 percent increase over the current number there and in California. The estimated $1 billion expansion represents a policy shift for the Obama administration, which had shelved earlier plans to expand the mainland defense system.

The Obama administration has said North Korea is still years away from having the capacity to launch a nuclear-armed missile strike against the continental United States. But Pyongyang has made faster-than-expected improvements in its long-range missile technology and successfully put a satellite into space recently. The satellite launch uses the same technology required to fire an intercontinental ballistic missile.

So President Obama cancels White House tours and buys a bunch of ICBM interceptors instead.

Interesting.

How quickly the Dr left forgets.

Hey Dufuses, these ate the same defensive shield missiles Obama said don't work in 2008.

Good thing he isn't sitting on a load of oil while waving around those WMD the way he is.

"Obama: I Was Against the 14 Additional Missile Interceptors In Alaska Before I Was For Them"

"In 2009, Obama gutted Bush plans to expand the missile field at Ft. Greely, Alaska from 30 to 44 interceptors. Now guess what?"

I can't believe a country of our size would react to this mouse.

Is there anybody in Washington interested in fixing the unemployment problem?

The chances of North Korea hitting the US with an ICBM are about the same as one of those interceptors actually hitting an incoming missile.

Which is to say very low.

Great... he cancelled plans to expand missile defense, then years later starts it up again. That will cost us more guaranteed plus it puts us behind. This thing would have been complete and now it will be 2017 before it's ready.

It's amateur hour in the White House folks.

A good analogy is that Kim Jong Un is like a lonely bored five year old who acts out for attention. good. bad. inbetween...

I wonder about that.

We've been getting almost daily reports on Iran's nuclear program for years now. But it was one day a couple of years ago the boy dictator's father suddenly emerges on the scene with one without any Iran-style media buildup. That seems strange to me.

NO WRONG AGAIN

its the LYING and the HYPOCRISY and its the LOW INFO VOTER who actually believed him THEN when he said this..

and as always...DEMS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN WRONG ON issues like this...

even as far back as the early 2000's...obama said he did agree with the defense systems being done or discussed..

JUST ADMIT IT FOR ONCE....when he GOT IN, he saw that BUSH WAS RIGHT,....and then we can move along and do something about the little guy....who's family has BAMBOOZLED more than ONE potus in their time.

Danni doesn't date quote his actual words from 2008. After all Danni repeatedly demonstrates that she feels Obama is not responsible for the words he says.

Since none of the interceptors were needed so far, it seems reasonable to delay any build up until there is a credible threat and there is evidence they will work.

If 30 interceptors can't stop an NK missle, I doubt 44 will.

But never let something like that get in the way of welfare for the war machine.

#18 to intercept an icbm is no small feat. I think sk. and Japan are the ones under threat. If they fired at us even China might stand away......

its getting close to the time we need to be arming Japan and south korea....and I would support all of that.....

The danger of The PRK is that they believe what they say. They are not kidding or promoting a wild propaganda, their statements reflect a extremely skewed world view that sees the outside world as a collective enemy- they do not even trust their allies to travel in their country unescorted. The Chinese and Russians have no privileges there. The only accepted religion is that of state worship. These guys are nuts, with nuclear weapons and an ideology of conquest and revenge. Lucky for us the power center is in the capital, the only city to have power most of the time. The fact is that the south would win a conflict with the north, with or without US help. They have the financial, diplomatic, and military power to stave off an invasion, and would respond to an attempt with one of their own. Koreans don't do anything halfheartedly, the retribution would be extreme. The south look at the north like the west Germans looked at their east German brothers; poor, underdeveloped and backward. They do not want to foot the bill to develop the north.

Instead of providing their defense for them, you mean?

Good grand strategic move. The interceptors were originally going to be in Poland, pissed off the Russians needlessly. Reallocating resources to cover the current hotspots makes sense.
