Researchers at Brown University have succeeded in creating the first wireless, implantable, rechargeable, long-term brain-computer interface. The wireless BCIs have been implanted in pigs and monkeys for over 13 months without issue, and human subjects are next. The long-term goal is equip people with movement disabilities with a wireless brain-computer interface.

My wife and I have frequently talked about what "becoming the old people" means...we'll always be willing to learn the new phone|tablet|whatever...But the integration of hardware into our bodies? I think that's what will ultimately "make me old".

My children won't think twice about it. Their children will most certainly laugh at me.

I'd like to bring in the "aliens" and the close of "A.I." for brief consideration. What were they really and why did thay look and act the way they did?

Furthermore, that little boy bot? How many think that in the final scenes he was realy in any sort of house?

the robotics for persons with disabilities looks most promising for this technology. They need to perfect the heat problem with the induction recharging process though.

Conservative Republicans will not be able to help themselves. Their thoughts will inevitably wonder into the forbidden and land them in jail.

This could be a good thing.

I found the episode and just watched it very interesting and definitely relevant. What it brought to mind was the possible origination of the Borg in the Star Trek series. There had to be a beginning to the Borg, why not a humanistic interest in efficient "learning" that grew out of control? Just look at the characters in the show. They already have a bionic attachment to their faces. Give that story line another thousand years and one could see how it would develop into a Borg like species - hive mindset and all.

Thanks for the link.

Now there's a good point. And he stood up against one of the most oppressive colonial governments in modern times - without firing a single shot.

[snark]Who knows, maybe Gandhi would have been more effective with a semi-auto pistola. [/snark]

It's an invalid analogy. At the time that Ghandi did his Ghandi thing (shortly after WWI) the empires of western European nations were begining to unravel. Dominant colonisation was being seen by the world as wrong. Do you really think Ghandi's stunt would have worked when the East India Company was at its peak? No wway. In fact, I doubt if anyone would have even heard of him if he had been born 100 years earlier.

Gandhi lived to the age of 78.

Still there does seem to be something about high profile people leading peace movements that attracts assassins.

According to the article,

The wireless BCIs have been implanted in pigs and monkeys for over 13 months without issue, and human subjects are next.

Why are we doing this to poor pigs and especially monkeys? It is one thing to use animals for legitimate medical purposes, but this is barbaric.

#42 | Posted by danv at 2013-03-15 11:29 AM | Reply | Flag:

Imagine with your new BCI you're going to the mall and you don't want every store spamming your brain! What do you do?

Bring a pocket full of "Portable Communications Devices" and leave one every 100m or so along your path. You'll have them pre-authenticated with your encryption keys and tamper detection methods... and your internet connection will be back in your car.

I patented that! and if you ever get one of these devices installed you're gonna want the PCDs for your personal
Self-Realizing Expandable Communications Network (Reitze pat pend)!

one could easily argue that the internets has become an extension of our nervous system, at least as much as any other tool could be considered to do so (and they are, given enough proficiency).

who would argue that this merging of organic and artificial intelligences is an altogether bad thing?
