Thursday, March 14, 2013

Former Iron Maiden drummer Clive Burr died in his sleep Tuesday after a battle with multiple sclerosis. He was 56 years old. Burr joined Maiden in 1979 after playing with a group called Samson, which also featured future Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson. He played with Iron Maiden on their landmark first three albums; Iron Maiden (1980), Killers and The Number of the Beast. After his tenure in Iron Maiden, Burr went on to play with a variety of groups including Trust, Alcatrazz, Gogmagog, and Clive Burr's Escape. Burr also played with Twisted Sister vocalist Dee Snider in a band called Desperado.

He couldn't carry the drum sticks of Jimi Hendrix's drummer.

Were there little gobbets of flesh left on his kit and stool?

Sorry, Clive. Rest in Metal.

Mitch Mitchell or Buddy Miles?

Mitch was the man. He was as good as Hendrix.

Here's the song Gangland-- not the best Iron Maiden song but some of Clive's best work.

Comparing Mitch Mitchell to Clive Burr is like comparing Van Halen to Jimi Hendrix: they played different styles at music at different times for different audiences so is generally a pointless game.

"so is generally a pointless game."

True, but it's fun to stir the pot.

Then let's do it right: John Bonham vs Neil Peart.

For the record, I am on Team Bonzo.

Iron Maiden wasn't a band with just one sound-- they remind me of Pink Floyd-- they had three distinct eras-- the era of Paul DiAnno and Clive Burr 1978-1981; the era of Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith 1982-1989 and the era of Janick Gers and everyone else, which is anything after Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.

They have had bright spots since 1990, but in reality, their legend was made with their rabid English following in the late 70s, their first 7 studio albums and their Live After Death album, and Clive was a major part of that,

My top 5:

Keith Moon (the best rock and roll drummer ever)
Neal Peart (the best drummer, period)
Buddy Rich
Charlie Watts
Cozy Powell

Here's a video from around ten years ago-- Iron Maiden's impassioned fund drive for Clive Burr in which he makes an appearance on stage.

I guess Maiden is stuck with the "new guy" now.
I give all due respect to Clive. But, Nicko McBrain is an outstanding and very underrated drummer.
Up the irons!

Don't forget Ringo.

Ringo was underrated IMHO. You hear him play and immediately know it is Ringo. That is talent. That is skill. And the solo on Abbey Road, as short as it may be, is awesome.

I won't/ can't do a top 5 ever list, but the ones who influenced my playing are:

1. John Bonham
2. Steven Perkins
3. Tim "Herb" Alexander
4. Mike Bordin

Frankly, it doesn't matter how good he is. He boinks Barbara Bach-- 'nuff said.

Reporters asked Lennon once if he thought Ringo was the best drummer in the world.

"Best drummer in the world?" said Lennon. "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles."

He was kidding. I like Ringo's drumming. Some think he is great.

No love for Ginger Baker?

By many accounts Karen Carpenter was an excellent drummer.

I am not familiar with Clive Burr or much of Iron Maiden. I am sorry for him, his family and friends, however.

Ginger Baker is the best ever, that according to Ginger.

Moon, wild man loose, then he learned to play a beat on Who's Next.

Bonham, awesome to say the least, but not my personal favorite.

Watts, that's a joke, right?

Peart and his 625 piece set, his aura is unmatched.

Here are some drummers a like:

The guy in Soundgarden
The guy in The Black Crowes
The guy in Green Day
The Guy in Our Lady Peace
Bill Ward
Stewart Copeland
Rick Lee
