Residents of the Falkland Islands voted almost unanimously to stay under British rule in a referendum aimed at winning global sympathy as Argentina intensifies its sovereignty claim, results showed on Monday. The official count showed 99.8 percent of islanders voted in favor of remaining a British Overseas Territory in the two-day referendum, which was rejected by Argentina as a meaningless publicity stunt. Only three "no" votes were cast.

Similar situation in Gibraltar. The residents consisently vote to stay under the more competent rule of the British rather than go back under the Spaniards - even though most of the them are ethnically Spanish.

I have older family from Gibraltar who always considered themselves Spanish and who grew up resenting the British. But the last time they visited, they talked to some of the locals and they actually changed their mind about the whole thing. The fact that southern Spain was going through a drought and Gibraltar had excess water due to superior preparation - even offering excess water to the Spanish who refused out of spite - did a pretty good job of illustrating the difference between British and Spanish rule.

The Brits pre-date Argentina there, but are themselves pre-dated by the French (I think, and maybe another euro power too).

No indians.

Argentina did, however, have a short grasp of the islands, just before the Brits came back. That much is true. Its a messy history, but only slightly bloody.

That the islands are somehow sacred Aegentine land, however, is just a STUPID, SILLY, PIG HEADED idea. Pure domenstic politics no matter who gets hurt.
