Nanoparticles carrying a toxin found in bee venom can destroy human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) while leaving surrounding cells unharmed, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have shown. The finding is an important step toward developing a vaginal gel that may prevent the spread of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. "Our hope is that in places where HIV is running rampant, people could use this gel as a preventive measure to stop the initial infection," said researcher Joshua L. Hood.

No wonder beekeeping was a fad among the (ahem!) more artistic and esoteric types in the 80's. Royal jelly!

"Was you ever stung by a dead bee?"

"vaginal gel" "places where HIV is running rampant"

Colorful writing.

Interesting how they think it will work on tumors, too.

Melittin, the principle component of apitoxin in bee venom:

en.wikipedia.org

Melittin also exhibits potent anti-microbial activity. For example, melittin has been shown to exert "profound inhibitory effects" on Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that causes lyme disease. Melittin has also been shown to kill the yeast Candida albicans and to suppress Mycoplasma hominis and Chlamydia trachomatis infections.

Sounds like mad scientist stuff.

I like it. :)

Melittin is also a component of pollen - just two weeks ago my supplier at my favorite market lost his license because of alleged "medical" claims on the package: "Highest Vibrational Foods the Planetary Surface is Capable of Yielding." So, no more pollen.

I have some currently, but there is no other place to acquire. They made raw milk illegal too and I can't drink anything homogenized. It's as if there is a concerted effort to eradicate everything that I love.

It would suck having HIV and being allergic to bees...

yeah, 'cause they obviously knew how to arm nanoparticles with bee venom 30 years ago.

Really, do you ever add anything worthwhile, ever?

Same for #9.

WOB.

Your dearth of humor is a bore, Zara.

another thread shows how dat ebil gubmint's setting the standard of TCP/IP protocol enables not only cloud computing, but the internet as we now know it.

If the repugnant self-styled "conservatives" of today would've had control of the purse strings in the past, they'd have aborted the entire internets, as well as the NIH, which funds a lot of studies similar to this one, in addition to a plethora of other pet-peeve single-voter hot-button issues, and basically ground any science which bears any relation to biology or chemistry to a standstill.

If you're still in doubt, I refer you to the indubitable facts laid out in the "science" textbooks published by Bob Jones University Press:

www.drudge.com

The unholy marriage between well-financed republicans and the know-nothing evangelical christian right has spawned a baby of ignorance that should've been aborted long ago.

it's this kind of s*heisse that makes us an international mockery, folks.

True, the influence of the religious right is suffocating to republican party. It is one reason why I find myself with no party to associate with my political beliefs. But alas, there are no political parties that respect and appreciate the economic and culture benefits of a science.

Of course not, we all know the only thing that drives economic growth is short sighted BS like tax cuts so we can spend more at WalMart.

The Red Queen's race is an incident that appears in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass and involves the Red Queen, a representation of a Queen in chess, and Alice constantly running but remaining in the same spot.

"Well, in our country," said Alice, still panting a little, "you'd generally get to somewhere else -- if you run very fast for a long time, as we've been doing."

"A slow sort of country!" said the Queen. "Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!" [1]

Never mind the man behind the curtain who lied about the connection of HIV and AIDS in the first place, and that there remains no proof that HIV causes AIDS at all.

Will you admit that meth addiction causes retardation?

#19 Meth-amphetamine? at what age?

How about the amphetamines given to kids with "ADHD" (translation - too smart to brainwash)? Yea, I think so. Thankfully DARWIN's principals take care of that.

But just because they're stuipd doesn't mean I don't care. I advocate against putting kids on drugs, including drugs for viruses that either don't exist or are harmless.

There are way too many lies told to sell drugs.

Or do you happen to believe that the 50% of the USA who are "on-something" are not over medicated?

Sure you don't like what he said - try following that idea and your comment maybe more relevant.

There should be penalties for saying something so stupid.

HIV definitely exists.

HIV definitely is harmful.

Regardless of how many youtube videos you can post saying otherwise.

JPW's religion!

I'm sorry, but calling something someone's "religion" is just as bad as busting out a Hitler comment.

Automatic FAIL.

No proof,

Nonsense.

We had a 100+ post thread on your garbage "documentary" where you showed yourself absolutely unprepared to say something so authoritatively.

Hell, you're not even up to snuff on basic modern laboratory techniques that make your statement absolutely laughable, yet you want to be taken seriously?
