A receipt floating around the Internet shows that a $1,453 pizza delivery received just a $10 tip. The person who uploaded it to Reddit said his friend delivered 85 pizzas. The Daily Mail claims, by way of Cornell Hotel School professor Mike Lynn, that pizza delivery workers should be tipped a minimum of $2 per pizza.

It's not the most prestigious profession but delivering pizzas still deserves respect. One poor guy got none of that this week when he delivered a whopping $1,453.95 worth of pies and got a measly $10 tip.

Now, even I would probably have tipped him at least $50. But I can see a situtation why such a small tip may have been left.

Seeing as it's so many pizzas, it may have been a group thing. I know at my job, sometimes we have ordered alot of pizzas. Not 1K of them, but we have. The person receiving the pizzas may not have been the one ordering them and couldnt afford 10% ($170) or much less 20%. The tip should have been worked in when the order was made.

But of course, my question is:

Does he deserve close to $300 just for bringing pizzas out of a car, which probably too less than an hour to do? Now I'm sure there are jobs that make less than $300 an hour doing labor less hard than moving pizza boxes.

I always pay 20% when ordering pizza, but I've never ordered $1,453.95 worth before.

This was probably for a party/event/occasion and its very well likely that the person paying the bill wasn't prepared to tip.

But thats no excuse. 1% of the bill is $14.54, they tipped $10. Go back in and ask everyone to donate a dollar for the tip, or better yet, be prepared.

Does he deserve $290 (20%) for delivering the Pizzas? Does he deserve $145 (10%)?

IMO, he deserved more than $10 for delivering $1,453.95 worth of pizzas. how many trips did he have to make? did he get the use of the company van? is there a company van? I assume that is a lot of pizzas. or super fancy toppings. gold flakes?

informed the internet that his friend delivered a serious 85 pizzas

85 pizzas. Now, my question is, did someone from the party help bring in all those pizzas? If he did it by himself, I can see a tip of about $50. If the customer helped, I could see a $30 tip.

Anyone who's got enough money to have 85 pizzas delivered to their door has enough to tip $100.+

The pizza pigs who shafted the delivery guy are just jerks.

either way, $10? it's less than 1% and it's a bit insulting.

Most restaraunts that provide that amount of catered food add an automatic % gratuity...

...sounds like management forgot to establish a basic policy to ensure their servers aren't shafted in such situations...

...I hope that guy sneezed on every one of those pies...

...LOL...

You are right, 1eye, and they should have done that. Maybe, just maybe that's all they had on hand to tip and if the price had been quoted beforehand it could have avoided this bad ink.

The article is saying $2/pizza is the acceptable tip. I usually tip more than that. But in this case, I would think $100 would OK. He didn't have to drive to 85 different houses, after all.

#10 | Posted by Sully at 2013-03-07 09:59 AM | Reply | Flag:

I bartended, bussed and waited tables for 12 years in my younger days, and usually tip over $2 for a pie, but, and I can't believe I'm saying this, I'm going to agree with Boaz. $50 would be okay if it were me. Like Sully said, the guy didn't drive to 85 houses, but further than that, he didn't bring in one pizza at a time.

#11 | Posted by Hagbard_Celine at 2013-03-07 10:20 AM | Reply | Flag:

85 pies would take multiple trips unless the driver had a pick up truck. The manager should have quoted a price that included a delivery charge for the driver akin to restaurants doing 18% gratuity included for parties over 6 people.

I mainly worked in store when I worked pizza and I can tell you the cooks got crap. Large orders are hell on the in store staff and they never get anything for doing it.

Tipping is one of capitalism's more gross manifestations. It's undignified. It's not the size of the tip, it's whether the pizza dude (you listenin', Herman Cain?) pays his gofer a living wage. herm

If every person threw in a dollar, it would be more than enough. I hope more than 85 people are eating 85 pizzas.

#14 | Posted by NotMyRealName at 2013-03-08 10:42 AM | Reply | Flag:

Why is tipping a percentage of the total bill?

When I goto a lowrange restaurant I get the same service I do at a midrange restaurant.

Why tip $2 per pizza? It would seem reasonable to tip based upon runs back to the car, with a bonus for min runs......

In this case, 28/5(stack) = 6 runs.... so $12 bucks!

This tipping thing is outta hand.... they say delivery... so deliver it already....

:)

I would have given him an even $1,700 and told him to keep the change (~17% or $246).

If I could afford to pay 1,453.95 for a pizza party, 1,700 would have been just as easy.

This post nails it for me, I'm having pizza for lunch today :-)

Yum, you're making me hungry, path. Maybe I'll pick up a Papa John's on my way home later on today. Cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, and sausage! What toppings do you usually order on your pizza?

#20 | Posted by CalifChris at 2013-03-08 12:01 PM | Reply | Flag:

Curious, does anyone tip the guy at the register if you go inside to order your pizza and take it home rather than have it delivered? I normally don't.

#21 | Posted by CalifChris at 2013-03-08 12:04 PM | Reply | Flag:

I wouldn't even tip at a church if the invisible man didn't show up!

CalifChris:

A local thin crust ma and pa pizza joint above a nearby bar where you can order your pizza and have it delivered to the bar, I tip as I would in a restaurant. I usually order mushroom and peperoni or sausage with red and green peppers.

There's a famous Chicago style pizzeria near by as well, when I order that style I usually get "The Lou": Spinach mix, mushrooms and sliced roma tomatoes covered with three cheeses

Or I get The Malnati Chicago Classic™
Made with Lou's lean sausage, some extra cheese and vine-ripened tomato sauce on Buttercrust

www.loumalnatis.com

They ship nationwide so you can get it delivered to California :-)
You can tip the UPS person is you wish ;-)

I think Boaz'$50 is fine, assuming there weren't multiple trips back to the pizzeria.

I consider myself a good tipper when I eat out or have food or other items delivered to my home if I get good service. While $10 on a $1400 order does seem a bit miserly the reality is that tips are optional not required and should not be expected or demanded.

Yes, but it speaks to the service and labors performed for the individuals (80 pizzas), not to mention their ability to comprehend basic American civility.

$10 for $1400 meal is miserly at minimum, insulting at best. Sorry, 10% is kind of the standard, regardless.

Thanks, path. And by the way, your Chicago-style pizza toppings sounded real tasty -- except for the red peppers. lol

After all the pizza-talk on here, I did end up picking up a pizza from Papa John's on my way back home earlier tonight. Even though it's just a chain pizzeria, have to admit it tasted pretty good. But that might've been 'cause I was hungry and hadn't eaten anything earlier plus not in much of a mood to have to cook tonight? : )

No. I take issue with you, good sir. It's "insulting" at minimum, and at worst (I assume you meant that when you said "best") it's fighting words actions.

I hope the owner or manager threw in a few extra bones to partially make-up for that slap in the face. Good money says that this driver also helped to make the pizza's, as well as deliver them. $1,400 in pizza takes hours to prep and cook, I know from experience.

There is nothing undignified about any hard days work. It is an excellent social convention; no written rules.

I have found that bad servers generally, on average, make less money than good servers. It is a good system for punishing poorly performing workers. Is that why u dispise tipping?

Any decent pizza place pays the delivery guy a special rate for that kind of delivery. That's because scum bags with big parties still don't tip for crap. I used to see this in The Loop in Chicago all the time. We would have delivery drivers take massive pizza orders to a huge corporation. They'd have to load them up and get them up to whatever floor, then set them all up... and then some d-bag would just sign the receipt and not leave a tip.

Seriously... if you are feeding 500-1000 people... and you can't tip the guy that got the food there and set it up... then you shouldn't be buying out.

Ah, my friend have you never worked a tip-paying job?

Part of this issue revolves around self-interest (making tips) versus the integrity of the business (delivering pizza). They should not be opposing issues, ever, but cheapskates tend to magnify any potential divided interest, imo.

#36 | Posted by redlightrobot at 2013-03-09 12:27 PM | Reply | Flag:

I'd say ten bucks is sadly classless on a $1400 order, although there's a sort of Law of Diminishing Returns at work here.
They would have probably tipped ten bucks on a $140 order as well.

If you typically tip $2 when you order one pizza (which is high, by the way), are you going to tip $170 on 85 pizzas?
Some may, most certainly won't.

"the reality is that tips are optional not required and should not be expected or demanded."

True, but that's not really the point here, IMO.
Do they have a right not to tip more? Of course.
Was it the right to do, on the other hand?

It's also a matter of reasonable expectations, and I think the driver could reasonably expect more than $10, otherwise this wouldn't be a story.
But yes, if the driver expected $100 or more, he was setting himself up a bit for disappointment, even for an order of this size.
