Garance Franke-Ruta: Uncle Sam had a much older and classier sister named Columbia, the feminine historic personification of the United States of America, who has since the 1920s largely fallen out of view. ... Enough time has passed, it seems, that we might consider reviving her spirit, and returning her to the pantheon of America characters for the years to come.

From the 18th century until the early decades of the 20th, Columbia was the gem of the ocean, a mythical and majestic personage whose corsets or breast-plates curved out of her striped or starred or swirling skirts with all the majesty of a shield. She was honored from the birth of the nation -- "Hail, Columbia!", whose score was first composed for the inauguration of President Washington, was an unofficial anthem until the "Star-Spangled Banner" displaced it as the official national one in 1931....

America was Columbia in the same way that England was Britannia and France was Marianne. America's capital is the District of Columbia.

Face it Doc...humans as a whole had more panache and class 100 years ago. We've gone from flowing prose and finely crafted script to slang and Twitter. From elegance to obscenity. At some point in our history (I'm drawing a line in the sand somewhere in the mid-20th century), our culture lost its culture, and avant garde went from meaning 'stylistically new' to 'throw feces on the wall and call it art'.

We've had discussions on the DR in the past about the slow degeneration of culture..and it's sad to say, but Columbia is a victim of that erosion. As a whole, we have no class..and don't recognize the efforts of those that do.

Yes, this was when women were women and the feminine was prized. Women were once considered strong, yet female. We gave battleships and bombers female names. Atlanta intentionally took on the feminine version of "Atlantic". But the beauty, strength, and vitality of the matriarchal figure was destroyed by liberals and feminism. We can longer celebrate the qualities of a woman. We are forced to view society as one androgynous glob. That is unless we are objectifying women or relegating them to some weakened class by providing them special protections and consideration by the gubbermint. But when using pronouns, don't you dare indicate gender by saying "she". "They" is preferred by today's liberals. Or if referring to a hypersensitive congressperson from California, you are well advised to just call them senator.

Well thought out retort, CBOB. I assume you are one of those to whom I referred in my earlier post. Intellectually incapable of providing a well considered and eloquent argument to JAO's assertion. JAO is correct; if you look at the depictions of Columbia provided in the article, she is at once compassionate and strong and embodies the character of the country she is meant to portray. She is feminine without being a waif. Contrast the depictions of Columbia with how women are depicted in popular media today: harried, career-minded, masculine to the point of macho. How would the suffragettes react to modern womanhood? They would no doubt be impressed with what women have achieved, but I believe they would also be appalled at what women have given up in the process.

I wholeheartedly agree that we as a nation have lost our class and culture and have become a country of obscene classless turds.

That being said, I really hope Columbia returns and releases a porno movie.

In my lifetime America has always been viewed as the "fatherland", never the "motherland". Germany the same thing. The Nazis fought and died for the "fatherland". On the other hand, Russia has always been the "motherland" and mother Russia. To some degree the same is true of Britain. To this day the song Hail Brittania is played at many public events in that country.

Male/Female perception of the nation by the inhabitants. Says something (- I'm not sure what) about the mindsets of the populations.

My wife's from the UK and when I tried to impress her ages ago by being able to sing (at least part) of "Rule Britannia" her rejoinder were these words accompanied by the same tune:

Hail, Britannia
Marmalade and jam
Five Chinese crackers up your [...]
Bam-bam-bam-bam-bam!

Classy, eh?

Good point. About the time the venerable female symbol went into decline. Too bad, sez I. We need our own Marianne; much better, at least for me, than Uncle Sam, some variant on the Roman goddess Libertas.

(I recall Eugene McCarthy - a kind and interesting man (at least in his latter years) - when running for president, suggesting he'd appoint a woman secretary of agriculture because, after all, the Roman symbol for agriculture was Agricola, a woman. Oddball, sure, but interesting.)

Blame the free market and capitalism. The easiest way to make money is to pander to the lowest common denominator.

And as far as women being revered in the past. Their opinion was so revered that they couldn't vote or own property or go to college.

That was their form of reverence. Women were above the muck and dirt of politics. They were viewed as too pure to deal with the troubles of home ownership.

Easy, you decried the lack of culture and class in public American life. There's a direct link between that and free market capitalism. The maximum profit is not in culture, but in appealing to the public's base instincts. Look how all the smarter TV channels like Discovery and A&E have devolved into trash. Their goal was not to educate or bring culture to people, their goal in a capitalist society is to make as much money as possible. That is obtained by throwing standards to the wind and joining the race to the bottom.
The remarks about women were directed to #4.

Excuse me, but conservatives did not invent political correctness. And whether you believe it or not, there are many liberal folk who are offended by gender-specific language. The article and my related comments are about how our culture has evolved and how (my words) well meaning, but misguided liberals have promoted a gender blind society. This, I believe, has been a detriment to women, our culture, and our country.

Like not letting them get involved in dirty finances by outlawing them as executors? Or allowing them to refuse jury duty? That's history.

Well you missed the point completely...which somehow doesn't surprise me. My guess is you didn't read the article either. But since you seem new to this intellectual-backwater, I will indulge you with a response.

In not a singe post of mine will you find I suggest there is "some sort of deterioration of womanhood". I am arguing there is a disregard for the strength and beauty of the feminine (as described in the article) and that this disregard is generally supported by liberals who view gender differentiation as a type of bigotry.

So, that's just like my opinion, 1eyedman.

Aaaah! Doc finally has connected with his spiritual roots: the insane violence and hatred of the French Revolution.
That's where these neo-pagan images first emerged, when the radicals seized Notre Dame and had truly ridiculous spectacles of women dressed as 'the goddess of reason' and such as a desecration of the altar during 'rationalist' celebrations.
Maybe Doc will read a book someday, possibly check even Wiki, to learn what his heritage really is.
There is nothing new among the people who think they have new thoughts, like Doc.
