WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN NO ONE'S EXPECTING: AMERICA'S COMING DEMOGRAPHIC DISASTER

Modernity's extinction event is coming fast -- and it's not extra-terrestrial in origin but man-and-woman-made. If an asteroid ever hits us, the human race -- if Mr. Last is right -- will surely already be dying.

The problem is that we moderns no longer seem to want to have children -- or at least not enough to keep up with requirements of such utilitarian sounding terms like "replacement rates." This is not a surprise to the author -- and it should not be a surprise to any parent: "raising children is difficult, resource intensive, socially inhibiting, and (if we can be candid) often unpleasant, it is not an exercise many people want to put themselves through multiple times."

Our demographic challenges are greater than our economic ones because our greatest economic challenges are really demographic in nature. In short, too many gray hairs and too few replacement taxpayers. In light of our demographic realities, Keynesianism is economic malfeasance and, to the advocates of growth, there is a deeper supply-side problem.

Human reproduction and economics, strange bed fellows? Our tax system, our entitlement systems, our safety nets all pyramid schemes in one way or another all requiring more participation from from a group of people less inclined to participate.
We have been told that global warming or a pandemic or a asteroid strike would bring about our demise as a civilization but who knew it would be the birth control pill and the condom.

There are plenty of educated, hard working, young, good people out there. They're called immigrants. Bring 'em in. Make them American. Put them to work.

Even in light of this article, it is somehow reassuring to me to know you're not reproducing.

Who cares----adjustments will be made---the worn out "bring in the immigrants" will only result in more balkinization and problems. As Teddy Roosevelt said in 1915: "There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities."...

GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENT INSTITUTE
Green Keynesianism:
Beyond Standard Growth Paradigms

Should the economy reach a point at which debt reduction becomes a major issue, there are many options that are consistent with Green Keynesianism. The Keynesian policy toolkit includes contractionary as well as expansionary measures, and these too can be adapted for environmental ends, especially by placing taxes on environmental
"bads" or higher income segments of the population. Such policies could include: health care reform to limit growth of unnecessary health spending and high administrative costs; a carbon tax with partial per-capita rebate to generate revenues while inducing a shift away from fossil fuels and preserving or improving income equity; higher taxes on upper-income earners and capital gains (eliminating the Bush-era tax cuts, for example, would eliminate more than half of the projected U.S. deficit)

And... how many more people can we fit on this planet? Do you have the faintest idea the kind of population explosion we have had and just how much more populated by humans the earth is than at any previous time in history? Not to mention just how very dependent on our petroleum economy we all are? We're going to hurt badly enough when that non-renewable resource runs out, and more population will just intensify the pain.

I don't believe in draconian population control measures, unless technology should find some way to defeat aging, in which case people would have to only be allowed to breed when accident, injury, or ennui claimed another life. On the other hand though, I highly doubt in the big scheme of things that this is a problem. A little difficult for programs based on the premise of population growth like social security, but in the grand scheme, it looks more like a self-controlling population mechanism at work, and I'm glad to see it kicking in before (if it's not already) too late.

If anyone is interested in justifying your love of all things Keynesianism with Sustainable development, I'm sure a number of us would like to see that. If Gaia really exists as an "intelligent" system, it may very well create anti-toxins--viruses and epidemics--to reduce the population level of the human species to sustainable numbers--and sustainable at much lower resource consumption levels. Nature does it all the time.

Do you have the faintest idea the kind of population explosion we have had and just how much more populated by humans the earth is than at any previous time in history? - Zero

Do you?

The fact is technology over time has enabled more people to live on the planet. By making resources utilization more efficient. This will continue, or it won't, but just because technology and innovation slow (Kunstler) doesn't mean we are at the end, there are people working on these issues in ways he hasn't enumerated..... We have also never travelled as far or as fast, does that mean we won't go further or faster? Of course not.....

These people have no clue as to what the impact of population growth is on the life-support systems of the planet. - Nulli

Do you?

If the life support system was at an inflection point we wouldn't be seeing China increase its meat/beef production, it costs too much in "life-support systems" to have. There are more life support uses of the land, we could get more out of it. Yet that is exactly what is happening. You should read counter opinions to Kunstler since that is your POV, confirmation bias and all.

I understand I have a positive bias, but why shouldn't we? What is the point it proclaiming game over we should just give up? Besides not one of you "nattering nabob of negativity" have ever gotten a prediction correct.......

Welcome to the land of Ray.

Capitalism is unsustainable in a finite world and will die. It deserves to die anyway, for being such an alienating and inhuman mode of existence, but mother nature will snuff it out sooner or later in any event.

No but I've got a cool Obama/Marx dart board.

The concept of a Pyramid scheme is central in may economic theories. One of the reasons Rome fell was it's failure to keep it's pyramid scheme of taxpayers, conquest and slaves working. Today America faces the same challenges except we have traded the slaves in for the permanent Democrat underclass and the conquest of new territory for the international banking and investment markets.
