Israel to Discuss Pollard with Obama

Israel's prime minister will discuss the fate of an Israeli spy imprisoned in the U.S. during President Barack Obama's upcoming visit. Jonathan Pollard was a civilian intelligence analyst for the Navy when he gave thousands of classified documents to his Israeli handlers. He was arrested in 1985 and sentenced to life in prison two years later. "The time has long since come for Jonathan to go free," Netanyahu recently told his wife, Esther Pollard.

Has Benjamin Netanyahu freed Mordechai Vanunu or is he arrested yet again for telling the world what we already know about Israel hording nukes? What about Noam Chomsky being allowed to speak at universities in Israel? How is he still too provocative for any "free and Democratic" society? Any Zionist outrage should be stuffed into a Palestinian olive and then down Netanyahu's fat, ugly throat before he croaks on about ethical standards or releasing Israeli terrorists.

Good to see that even righties agree with us lefties on this one. Pollard should serve his sentence. Obama should scold the Israelis for even suggesting he should get preferential treatment. If he gave Pollard a break now it would be a signal to Israeli spies to not worry, America will give you a pass.

Exactly, Danni. I know someone who was part of this investigation and the amount of material this jerk gave away would fill a large room. If he had given it to Canada I'd say the same: lock him up and throw away the key.

Dear Israel, sorry but hell no.

We are a sovereign nation and you have no more right to snoop in out land than the Soviet Union at the height of the cold war.

Just be glad we're only keeping him in prison and not treating him the way others treat spies.

The Pollard Affair really highlights the cognitive dissonance which separates the hardcore Pro-Isreal lobby and the rest of America which overall supports Israel but will never support an Israeli spy working in the US to turn over secrets to that (or any) foreign government.

You attack the thread as an anti-Israel post, which it isn't. That puts you in the Pollard defenders column, with respect to the subject of this thread.

(One need not be anti-Israel to think Pollard's status as a criminal in a cell was something he earned.)

Taking note of that fact does not make me - as you absurdly assert - a liar. But it also doesn't disabuse the rest of us of the notion that you exhibit a pronounced tendency to produce crackpot pots.

It would be a shame if moderates (such as myself) who in general support Israel on most issues felt compelled to support Pollard or even the Israeli government in seeking his release. Pollard spied against the USA. He is a traitor. He belongs in a prison cell.

The question to those Americans who believe Pollard should be released absolutely comes down to loyalty to country, but the question is which country?

As an example if we had Americans of Italian or Irish descent demanding that a treasonous spy for Ireland or Italy be released, there loyalty would absolutely be questioned, and most Americans would expect those without loyalty be deported while Pollard be kept imprisoned.

A Mr ben Zygier, a dual Australian-Israeli citizen, killed himself in December 2010 in Israel's notorious high-security Ayalon Prison, where he was being held in extraordinary secrecy on charges he broke Israeli national security laws.

Mr Zygier was detained for alleged Israeli national security offenses in February 2010 and died in a supposedly suicide-proof cell 11 months later.

At least Mr Pollard is alive, which, is more than can be said for Mr Zygier. Perhaps, President Obama might like to seek further clarification on this matter.

So here you have a real spy, caught red handed. Like Robert Hanssen, he was not subjected to torture, solitary confinement naked in a cold cell for almost three years without trial. Rightie tighties are consistently treated better by the CIA, military and police than left leaning independent thinking individuals.
