Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The British government has secretly ramped up a program that strips people of their citizenship on national security grounds -- with two of the men subsequently killed by American drone attacks. An investigation by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism for The Independent has established that since 2010, Home Secretary Theresa May has revoked the passports of 16 individuals, many of whom are alleged to have had links to militant or terrorist groups. Mohamed Sakr, who was born in Britain and also held Egyptian citizenship, was killed in a 2012 U.S. airstrike after revocation. "It appears that the process of deprivation of citizenship made it easier for the U.S. to then designate Mr. Sakr as an enemy combatant, to whom the U.K. owes no responsibility whatsoever," his former solicitor Saghir Hussain said.

That should slow things down at the old al-Qaeda recruiting center.

At least the Brits bother to do this first. Obama and Bush would not care if they killed a citizen with drone rockets.

I have to agree with Obama and Bush - if you join Al-Qaeda, you are an enemy combatant. If you are inside the USA, we send in the FBI. Otherwise, say hello to our little drone (or a CIA assassin or whatever).

Why bother stripping their rights if you are going to kill them anyway? Seems like a waste of time.

What other choice do we have? Allow these terrorists to put together another 9-11? It's not the war of the Greatest Generation but it's the war we are stuck with and we have to fight it with the tactics that work. Sorry if that offends some of my liberal friends.

Don't give obama any ideas.

Easy ones, Danni. Place the evidence before a judge and have a court examine the evidence before issuing a warrant for the ALLEGED terrorist's killing.
Any other questions?

Oh! Sorry, Danni. I forgot to tell you that yes, Bush should have done the same.

And deny the poor guys of their right to face their accusers? I suppose Lincoln should have ordered Union troops to demand the rebels surrender and face a trail. Definitely not shoot them, just arrest them. That would also have eliminated the conservatives' problem with that pesky black guy in the WH.

During WW2, do you seriously believe the Allies shouldn't have bombed the crap out of Japan and Germany because there were American citizens who joined the Axis and might have been in the target area?

And yes Nulli, I did support Dubya doing the same thing in Yemen.

Good idea. Death warrants without a trial. Sure you want to go down that road?

Judges have no authority or expertise to review droning before the fact. The analogy to FISA is flawed because that review is what they currently do in reviewing search warrants for probable cause. The executive either has lawful authority to drone under the AUMF and the LOAC or not. That is an executive and legislative problem.

Comparing a firing line at Antietam to mulling over drone strikes for 6-18 months while taking a dump on due process is retarded.

Yes, one: are you suggesting some sort of secret tribunal, like the FISA court?

**** NOT LIKELY seeing that the "al-Qaeda Recruiting Center" is in reality the...CIA!

What if we only "thought" the person joined al-Qaeda? We all know how reliable the intelligence services are. They apparently make mistakes quite often. We should capture American citizens and return them to the US for trial if we have reason to believe they are participating in combat activities against our troops. Then, if they are convicted of such, execute them as a traitor.

What's the difference. A Union soldier could have run up a negotiation flag and met the Confederates in the middle of a field pre-battle and told them they were being naughty and had to surrender.

Or better yet, Lincoln could have sent a letter to Jeff Davis and told him to turn himself in. and it's not like the Union generals just woke up on any given morning and said, "let's have a battle".

I'm still confused as to why all the due process guys here were so silent when Dubya was whacking accused American terrorists with drones. Couldn't Have anything to do with January 2008 could it? Or why they were so silent on the PATRIOT Act until Obama renewed it.

Diablo. That's unconstitutional you know. Habeus corpus and all that.

"The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it."

Section. 3.

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.

Amendment VI

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.

I applaud 0bama for doing at least this one thing right.

Habeas corpus has not been suspended. See the numerous habeas petitions related to Guantanamo.

No one in the perpetual war against anyone, anywhere for any reason has been charged with treason. Several have been charged with providing "material support" but so far none of those have held up.

In all criminal prosecutions...

Enemy combatants have not been "criminally" charged. Neither have those that have been droned. See the AUMF and the LOAC.

Can any authority in the government strip an American citizen of his citizenship? I have never heard of one. It might be an idea worth considering. Most countries have practiced exile from time to time- basically striping that person of citizenship, expelling them from their home. I nominate Billy Ayers, who brags of going to war with this country. The Weather Underground never claimed responsibility for bombings that actually killed someone, they waited for the news reports to see if they had first.

Wow, Danni sure sings a different tune when A democrat is in office.

You see, these are guys "alleged" to have ties to Al Qaeda. The alleged part comes from a LACK OF EVIDENCE. That alone s-h-o-u-l-d bother you. Why?
Because Saddam Hussein was alleged to have ties to Al Qaeda too. Remember that?

If stripping people of citizenship without evidence so we can CYA after nuking them is what it takes to stop another 9-11...

...maybe we need to take a serious look at ourselves for once. Or throw in the jock.
