Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, March 03, 2013

A man and his pregnant wife were on the way to the hospital in Brooklyn early Sunday when the cab in which they were riding was struck by another vehicle, killing them both. Their child, a baby boy, was delivered after his mother's death and died a day later. Nathan Glauber and Raizi Glauber, both 21 years old and members of Orthodox Jewish community, were heading to Long Island College Hospital.

Definitely a sad case to have the parents killed before the child was born. But why was it necessary for the article to mention that they were orthodox Jews? If they were Catholics, Protestants, Baptists, Scientologists, Muslims, Hindu, etc, would it have been mentioned? Is there any obvious relevance between ethnicity, religion and the accident? Would they mention same for the driver that hit the car?

You're right and it's just as sad when the child is killed before it's born.

I read this story earlier and it did provoke conversation with several people so I think it is appropriate for it the be posted here to provoke discussion. Of course it is tragic but somehow it is also interesting thinking about how this child will go through life knowing that his life started this way. It's as if this boy represents an incredible will to live even at this young age.
I don't really know what it was about this story but I've thought about it all day.

For the same reason it mentions that they were 21 and lived in Brooklyn. It's part of their biography.

"It's part of their biography."

so is being black and unmarried.

But if that were the case, it wouldn't have been mentioned. some things are just "hands off".

But I agree....it is part of their biography.

You're being too cynical. The race of a victim of tragedy is often mentioned in news stories, as it was when the Chicago honor student was shot to death.

You obviously misunderstand my humor. That's probably for the best.

New York Time people...they included that aspect for local color, not for national consumption.

Did anybody complaining about the couple's religion being mentioned even take a look at the article that had their photo? The religion was mentioned to explain the photo to the unwashed of flyover country who otherwise wouldn't know what they were looking at.
