Sharks risk being driven to extinction due to overfishing, with almost 100 million killed each year, scientists warn. Many species of shark need better protection to prevent their extinction within coming decades. Between 6.4 and 7.9 percent of all sharks are killed each year. "Biologically, sharks simply can't keep up with the current rate of exploitation and demand," said Boris Worm of Dalhousie University. "Protective measures must be scaled up significantly in order to avoid further depletion and the possible extinction of many shark species in our lifetime."

From the article:

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites) will consider greater protection of vulnerable sharks, including porbeagles, oceanic whitetip and three types of hammerhead to preserve their populations.

Sharks are caught for their fins for use in shark fin soup, a delicacy in Asia. The fins are cut off with the dead carcass being thrown back into the sea. Sharks grow slowly and take years to reproduce, which makes them vulnerable to overfishing.

The researchers estimated that global reported catches, unreported landings, discards and sharks caught and thrown back after their fins were cut off – a process known as finning – added up to 97 million fish caught in 2010.

The figure is only slightly less than the estimated 100 million caught in 2000, and could be anywhere between 63 million sharks and 273 million a year, according to research by North American scientists published in the journal Marine Policy.

It is estimated that between 6.4% and 7.9% of all sharks are killed each year, leading to decline in the number of some species.

Boris Worm, one of the report's authors, from Dalhousie University in Halifax, said: "Biologically, sharks simply can't keep up with the current rate of exploitation and demand. Protective measures must be scaled up significantly in order to avoid further depletion and the possible extinction of many shark species in our lifetime."

Although some regions, including the European Union, have banned shark finning, commercial fisheries for fins, meat, liver oil, cartilage and other body parts are largely unregulated in much of the world.

I'd like to see now these scientists came up with the 100 mil number.

Once in awhile Doc posts a legitimate thread. This is one of them. Sharks are being fished and killed indiscriminately----interest in them has developed into a fetish.

It doesn't matter. Industrial civilization is poisoning the oceans. Nobody gets out of here alive.

You'd need to read the article in the peer-reviewed journal Marine Policy.

Hundreds of millions of sharks a year ?
I call BS, is there a problem that needs to be address, yes.
Dose it need to be right away, yes.

Of the larger fish in the Ocean are there a 100 million muchless 270 million on any one kind swimming the ocean at on time.
I'm talking about tuna, sail fish, etc, etc, I really am asking, I don't know.

I wonder if the person claiming these numbers is related to Maxine Waters and did he have the same foolish look on his face as she did in claiming 170 million jobs would be lost because of the sequester.

Followed almost immediately with

Clearly we're dealing with MENSA level thinking here.

Shark finning is a horrible short sighted practice. Sharks have bery slow growth rates and can not stand the pressure of overfishing.

I have no idea about the number, but it is believable......

It ain't just sharks folks. Overfishing has been going on for hundreds of years, culminating in factory ships with mile wide nets that scoop everything living up and throw back things they don't want, dead.

The grand banks are the greatest fishery on the planet protected by Canadian and US Naval forces. When America was discovered, fisherman routinely pulled 800 pound bass out of the ocean using row boats and Labrador Retrievers, who pulled net corners back to the boat. One fish was all they needed per trip. By the 1900s, larger diesel powered boats filled their quotas with hundreds of 80 pounders. Today the take is thousands of 8 pounders. Same species, but few ever reach maturity.

Yes but its not u.s. over fishing that's the real culprit. Yes in some cases, and don't get me wrong nmfs and NOAA have done horrible jobs. But nothing compared to the complete abortion that is the ICCAT

How many fish in the sea?

Don't know. But a 10-year Census of Marinne Life study estimates more than 230,000 species of critters down there in the briny deep.

The scientists have come up with some dispiriting findings:

The surveys have also highlighted major areas of concern for conservationists. "In every region, they've got the same story of a major collapse of what were usually very abundant fish stocks or crabs or crustaceans that are now only 5-10% of what they used to be," said Mark Costello of the Leigh Marine Laboratory, University of Auckland in New Zealand. "These are largely due to over-harvesting and poor management of those fisheries. That's probably the biggest and most consistent threat to marine biodiversity around the world."

The main threats to date include overfishing, degraded habitats, pollution and the arrival of invasive species. But more problems are around the corner: rising water temperatures and acidification thanks to climate change and the growth in areas of the ocean that are low in oxygen and, therefore, unable to support life.

That is a staggering amount to say the least. I always believed the estimate was in single million figures. The video is insane. Is that a Great White? You got to have balls to swim with one of those beasts but considering the diver is female...

"Is that a Great White?"

It is. I believe she was free-diving, as well. Looks like an incredibly stupid thing to do, but... (I'll say that even the most experienced scuba divers I know, the ones I trust with my life, draw a line with Great Whites. They'll swim with tigers, hammerheads, you name it; but never with Great Whites.)

The "apex predator" concept is instilled early, mutating much of the view into a "kill or be killed" exclusivity. Nature is rarely as unforgiving to species survival as humanity.

You want to kill millions of sharks exactly why? So you can go to the beach without murderous sharks attacking you and your umbrella and eating your sunscreen and beach towel?

Libs should pass a civil rights bill giving equal rights to sharks and then put the sharp toothed fish on welfare and food stamps and within a few generations libbies will have to create a program to teach sharks to swim.

As long as the sharks have the right to abort on demand, and sharks of the same gender can marry, and they agree not to order more than one 16 oz Coke at a time when they dine out.

It's fine if you don't care about things you don't understand.

But your question, born of ignorance, is yours to answer.
