Bonnie Franklin, who portrayed divorced single mother Ann Romano on the '70s and '80s Norman Lear sitcom One Day at a Time, died Friday at her home in Los Angeles of complications of pancreatic cancer. She was 69. Romano was one of the first independent women to be portrayed on TV, wrestling with issues like sexual harassment, rape and menopause. In 1980, she portrayed Margaret Sanger, the women's rights and birth-control advocate, in the CBS TV movie Portrait of a Rebel: The Remarkable Mrs. Sanger. The movie's executive producer Marvin Minoff became her husband and they were married until his death in 2009. In 2004, Franklin addressed hundreds of thousands of women at an abortion rights march in Washington.

**** She played a tough, angry, competitive broad who wore the pants in the family and so in a way she "epitomized" divorced women everywhere!

She was a evil woman who did not know her place and the cause of the destruction of the family unit and the increase of homosexuality and low sperm counts in the males of are species.

Actually, I just thought she was homely and scowling. Never thought much about her except to wonder why television was bombarding us with tomboys like her and battle axes like Bea Arthur at the time.

To be honest I thought that show was predictable, tried too hard to be "serious," and really wasn't very funny. The ONLY reason I watched it was Valerie Bertinelli. But you know, RIP and everything, Bonnie.

Best part about that show was watching Mackenzie Phillips spiral down into a hole of cocaine abuse. Awesome.
