Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, March 01, 2013

A North Carolina mountain man who left modern conveniences for the backwoods decades ago is butting heads with local officials who say his forest compound isn't up to code. Eustace Conway, who runs a school that teaches hundreds of people how to live closer to nature, received a cease and desist letter from county officials because his buildings -- which he says were "carved literally from the wilderness" -- violate building and safety code. "Basically I'm living like the American heritage pattern of all our ancestors and the modern world isn't, and they don't know how to accept me," he said.

Mr. Conway is right that building to code would run contrary to the kind of school he operates, but perhaps a hefty insurance policy and/or a good assumption of risk clause in the matriclation documents could serve as a middle ground between him and the state.

A well-placed hellfire missle from our domestic drones would solve this problem.

He could just buy a giant tent and teach in that.

Is that how America's original mountain men lived? I say scru the gummint, scru insurance and anybody with a claim ax fights this guy for repayment.

How can a man fleece the gullible when The Man wants him to do it safely? What's next, they gonna go after my build it yourself airplane kit business just because I made them like the old ones, scrap canvas, leftover engines and bailing wire?

What's he's supposed to do? Teach people how to live closer to nature in a steel, plastic and glass highrise?

When I studied geography, I didn't have to move to Antarctica. If they are using buildings he built, what are they learning?

Great analogy. Or not.

"Don't worry, we are from the government and we are here to kill you." Lets see who they burn to death this time. "Freedom is not allowed in this country and we will mark you as a terrorist if you resist. We have burning domestic terrorist down to a simple play book. As well as killing a unarmed mother and her newborn from a sniper rifle quite well."

Nope. As for the government killing innocent people feel free to Google the following names,

Those that murdered the innocent child, Samuel age 14, when they shot him in the back with automatic weapons as he ran away are still free( (Roderick, Cooper). Hint he was also at Waco and admitted to shooting other people at Waco which came out in congressional investigation that they were unarmed as well.

The sniper, Lon Horiuchi, that shot and murdered Vicki, a mother, a wife, a free woman and killed her with a shot through the head as she held her baby in her arms, is still free.

As for the quote it came from part of a Ronald Reagan speech he gave about the Federal Governments idea of "helping". A part of his original quote was used by a number of conservative groups to better describe the American public opine of when the government claims they are here to help. It is been all over the place even on a ton of bumper stickers for decades now.

(The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'
Ronald Reagan)

Correction Lon Horiuchi was at Waco as well and not Roderick, Cooper. Wrote that under the wrong person.

It's hard to side with the government on this one. Not that building codes are bad but why can't they have some flexibility?

#20 | Posted by snoofy at 2013-03-02 02:57 AM | Reply | Flag:

State building inspectors have some latitude in interpreting State building codes.
Perhaps the State inspector saw something structurally unsound?
Regardless, the State has this Right, and as everyone already knows, states governance can do no wrong.

One way to look a State building codes is that thy protect the homeowner from a corner cutting contractor.
A more sinical view would be that State building codes are engineered to insure different industry all get a cut of every house built.

The "government", be it state or federal, only does things at the behest of bussness. It's always been that way and always will be.
Many of you, as usual, are directing your anger at the wrong institution from your cloud of ignorance.
It's called capitalism for a reason.

He should have done everything in his power to avoid being on the history channel.

That very well could be why he became a target.

The authorities are now finding themselves obligated to do something lest they get in trouble themselves. They could have played ignorant before, but now they can't.

He should have known better than to pander to the very establishment he was rejecting.
