Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

NPR: Given that Jimi Hendrix has been dead for more than four decades, the visionary guitarist has remained awfully prolific: He left behind a formidable tape library, full of alternate takes, discarded ideas and collaborations of varying quality, and those materials have been mined in the making of far more albums and compilations than he churned out during his 27 years. That one such collection would produce a chart-topping single in 2013 is a testament to Hendrix's enduring appeal, not to mention technological advancements and the eternal struggle to maximize the commercial clout of a lucrative catalog.

Thankfully, the newest collection of Hendrixiana (titled People, Hell and Angels, out March 5) is a suitable addition to the guitar giant's large posthumous output, drawn from recordings he'd made between 1968 and 1970 with a variety of co-conspirators.

Big deal. I saw Jimi Hendrix. Live. San Berdoo, baby, got a good whiff of tear gas after the concert because of pigs beating up gate crashers, but it was all in good fun.

"are you happy about anything?"

I was happy to see Hendrix live. Wasn't too happy about the tear gas after the concert, but it was tolerable. One of my crew got busted for dealing, wasn't happy about that, especially since I lost some good acid, but it was a fun evening.

"drawn from recordings he'd made between 1968 and 1970 with a variety of co-conspirators"

That might be worth having.

The stuff he was working on right before he died was crap (and has already been released under at least two different names).

I think the show was the "Dick Cavat"? show. Anyway, they used to re play those interviews on mtv or something but, they had Jimi on there and said they had to re schedule b/c he had passed out in his hotel room and missed the interview. It got me to thinking how many times did he do that before he died.

"I was happy to see Hendrix live."

My father-in-law still complains about being tossed out of a Hendrix concert in London. The story is that he complained about the obstructed view from a white guy's afro standing in front of him and was victim of a racist application of the security policy. Everyone who knows him assumes that "complained" means he punched the guy out. Based on what I've seen him do I always imagine it was a head-butt.

Nobody could set his guitar on fire and play it with his teeth quite like Jimi.

There is a contest in Rock N Roll Heaven to see who can release the most new material after they die. Tupac and Elvis were in a tight race, but Jimi is catching up quickly.

Consider a different angle Kanrei.

There's a new obvious risk to music-writer's fame. Write too many originals while having a recording contract the producers will make sure you're dead before releasing your songs so they can maximize profits while your fame being a 'legend' doesn't cost them anything.

As for me, I'll be a Legend in 2049 (reitze) whether or not I live till then (I'd be 86). And yea, thankfully I don't think it will be as much because of my music as it will be for my math.
