The American piano virtuoso Van Cliburn died Wednesday after a battle with bone cancer. He was 78. A native of Kilgore, Texas, he won the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow at age 23, becoming an American hero during the Cold War. His last public appearance came in September at the 50th anniversary of the prestigious piano competition in Fort Worth that bears his name. "Never forget: I love you all from the bottom of my heart, forever," he said.

Van Cliburn was to piano what Bobby Fischer was to chess.

what a stupid thing to say. Cliburn has been a hero to me since I was a small child and I even watched the ticker tape parade in NY..the ONLY one for a classical musician..

his album was the FIRST MILLION DOLLAR SELLER in classical music and he has helped sponser the van cliburn competition since 1962 which has given us some piano superstars...latest of note is OLGA KERN...and I'm sure you don't have a clue who she is so I"ll tell you. She's the hottest pianist YOU"ll ever see.

He has done countless charitable work throughout the art world and at one time was a GLOBAL superstar. Yeah he's from Texas and he lived here his whole life, basically....so what's your problem with that?

Anyone who thinks this is only of interest to Texans doesn't understand how big Van Cliburn was after he won that Tchaikovsky competition.
