Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

A teen's luck appears to have changed after a chance encounter with an Indiana restaurant owner during a 10-mile trek through ice and snow for a minimum wage job interview. It all started on Friday, when Art Bouvier, the proprietor of Papa Roux, a Cajun restaurant in Indianapolis, was laying rock salt outside the establishment after an ice storm earlier that morning. He said he was approached by a teen who asked him how far it was to 10th and Sherman.

"And I'm thinking we're at 10th and Post. I said, "Buddy that's probably six, seven miles." I said, "You'd be better off on a bus especially in this weather." He just said, "Okay, thank you." And he kept going.'

Later, as Bouvier was driving with his wife to a coffee shop, he was surprised to find the same person, still walking.

They pulled over, and asked him if he needed a ride.

"a Cajun restaurant in Indianapolis"

Of course.

See, we do have young citizens with drive--thought not with cars.

That's nothing. When I was a kid I had to walk 10 miles through barbed wire and minefields just to get to school - and it was uphill both ways.

Kids these days got it easy.

"The 18-year-old told Fox 59 that his mother died two years ago and he was looking for a job to support his brothers and sisters. He had to drop out of high school and recently got his GED."

It's because of kids like THIS that I get pissed at welfare queens taking advantage of the welfare system.

If there's anybody you would want our govt to help out, it's folks like this.

Kid's either a dumbass, a liar or a saint in the making.

I find myself wanting to adopt him and his siblings.

I had deep snow, steep hills, and creeks to cross. The worst part was getting across the creek in the winter time without getting my feet wet or worse, falling in, especially when there was heavy snow.

I'll never forget the time my feet started to go really numb in kindergarten. That slowed me down and I was lucky to make it home alive. My baby sitter put my feet in the toilette the moment I got there limping - and poored cold water on them. Funny how that burned. From then on I learned to run instead of slowing down whenever that happened.

Oh and my 1st job was $0.50 / hr, "under the table" in 1977, mostly poring concrete and stone-work (moving field stones to make walls, bridges, water-brakes, etc). It was definitely hard work but worth it because I saved enough to buy a 1976 CR125 in 1978. What an amazing ride that was on the MX track a neighbor had build.

OMG...no cellphone...no texting...

Poor babies now....poverty-stricken with Obummerphone, one TV, one car..

How did I survive in a pre-TV world.

An Obummerphones?

Might Obama simply have kept up to date with a program started by Reagan?

It's because of kids like this I laugh at the 'best and brightest' who allegedly have an advantage because they attended Phillips Academy. In fact, welfare queens have an advantage over those types, too!
Gee, did Edison or Tesla have a degree from MIT or Harvard?

#10 | Posted by Diablo at 2013-02-27 12:53 AM | Reply | Flag:

I think you've got a point diablo.

I've heard many people claim a new CCC could never work because kids would rather be on welfare than engage in honest labor.

If I could I'd not only put this kid in a new CCC I'd make him a camp commander.

#11 | Posted by Tor at 2013-02-27 01:03 AM | Reply | Flag:

I might, in the same mind, give him $50,000 and tell him to do what he thinks best, Tor! I would likely make a profit.

#12 | Posted by Diablo at 2013-02-27 01:35 AM | Reply | Flag:

We'll probably know every little detail of this kid's life inside of a week.

#13 | Posted by REDIAL at 2013-02-27 02:16 AM | Reply | Flag:

Well we know "Mr Bouvier told him that even if he was offered the Dairy Queen gig, he would double his salary if he came to work for him at Papa Roux instead."

Looks like the kid (man?) got something between what me and diablo wished we could do for him.

I hope that before the weeks out some elderly couple with a big house takes in the teen and his siblings.

#14 | Posted by Tor at 2013-02-27 02:21 AM | Reply | Flag:

Hope for his sake he doesn't have a cell phone.

#15 | Posted by REDIAL at 2013-02-27 02:43 AM | Reply | Flag:

If the kid has a cell phone he doesn't have any friends or family (aside from his siblings) to call him.

If he did I don't think this story wouldn't have happened.

#16 | Posted by Tor at 2013-02-27 02:50 AM | Reply | Flag:

We'll see. I wish him luck, but it's likely he's going to be a media football for a while.

How did this get to be news in the first place? Someone must have called it in.

Who benefits? Art Bouvier. People will come to Papa Roux to see this kid and to patronize the restaurant of such an altruistic man. It's great (and free!) advertising. I'll bet his sales double for a month.

But I'm a very cynical person.

Perceptive as well. I'd concocted a much grander plot.

I agree, I read that this morning. I'd of hired that kid even if I didn't need someone. Dropped out of school to take care of his brothers and sisters and still got his GED? I see a movie in this kid's future, Nah, Hollywood would need a sex scandal or something to blow up to make it interesting.

Hollywood still occasionally makes feel-good movies, PA. But one would need a bigger conflict than just this. This is a great opening scene...

What was that Will Smith movie where he got a job interview at an investment firm because he was a wiz at finishing a Rubik's Cube?

LOL, Sully. So maybe Papa Roux doesn't hire him to do deliveries.

Good movie. Flawed, in that it seems a bit preoccupied with financial worth as equal to human worth, and depressing at times, but Smith is very good here and the film is worth seeing.

#27 | Posted by cbob at 2013-02-27 10:00 AM | Reply | Flag:

Smith is often good. I just am not interested in that particular film. : )

I read about Chris Gardener (Pursuit of Happyness is based on his life) years before it got made into a movie.

Seems he was on the street one evening with his child and the local hookers got curious just what he was doing out at that hour with a kid.

When they learned he planned to die before giving up on being a father the street walkers gave him money for a hotel room.

I hope he was able to help them later on.

Neither had degrees! Just a good work ethics a few good idea's and the ambitionto make them happen! Too bad Tesla lost in the end but one really?

Tesla studied at multiple universities but frankly was to different from most of humanity to graduate.

Edison seems to have consumed every book at a large public library but he also sent one of his son's to MIT.

It's called Social Media. It 'went viral' after the restaurant owner posted it to his Facebook account. Someone in the media I am sure picked up on it. I despise it personally; but Social Media is VERY powerful.

Without a publicity whore telling our story for us, though, we're just another person.

He can get back to me when he's sucked a few dicks just for a place to sleep, then I'll feel like he's had it rough. But by all means, continue your thing, folks. Walking ten whole miles is a huge deal.
