A Plano lawmaker has introduced legislation to create a tax-free holiday for gun-buyers in Texas. The holiday would take place on Texas Independence Day, March 2. "We filed this bill, the Texas Gun Ownership Reinforcement Act, because we sincerely and strongly believe that Texas should take the lead in the fight against the federal government's attempts to infringe on our Second Amendment rights," said state Rep. Jeff Leach (R), who introduced the bill. "This act encourages and incentivizes lawful gun ownership and allows law-abiding citizens, hunters and sportsmen the opportunity to save money on firearms."

Wonder when Illinois will have a tax-free gun buying holiday?
But then Illinois doesn't have an Independence Day like The Republic of Texas.

March 2nd used to be a holiday in Texas. Banks closed, school was out. They don't do that any more. Probably because someone was offended and whined.

The NRA is a marketing organization whose real purpose is to convince people to buy more guns. This politician is doing its work very well.

Most people all ready own on average 4 guns each. So tax free is no big deal. If they really want to get serious they would end the ban on only one wife. Our Muslim brothers and sisters understand real freedom where a man can have 5,6,7 or 10 wives.

Isn't it time for real freedom, let the people decide for themselves.

Man...how about not taxes on ammo. Sheesh...if you can afford to buy a firearm, you don't have enough left over to put bullets in it.

When will the typical middle of the road gun nut figure out that the NRA is just a money producing shill of the gun manufacturing industry, and that the politicians who are shills for the NRA and receive regular large donations from the NRA really are doing nothing more than accepting bribes from gun makers?

You can't compare Plano to a major metropolitan area with a high poverty rate.

Worse: St. Paul, MN murder rate: 3/100,000
www.neighborhoodscout.com

In a liberal, non-gun crazy state, the murder rate is low.

What the true title of the thread should be is, "Gun Manufacturers Want Tax Free Holiday in Texas so They Can Sell More Guns". And then, an honest article, would discuss how the gun manufacturers, through their frontmen in the NRA, have successfully bought and paid for numerous local politicians to get them to push the idea.

The transparency and greed of the gun maker groups would be laughable but for the fact that there are so many stupid people who buy into the idea that they actually give a damn about anything other than profits.

Comparing El Paso to Juarez and saying its the guns? Really? Your comparisons defy logic.

El Paso has only 600,000 people. It's has the largest drug trade along the border. It does have an excellent police force and strong border patrol presence. But the lucrative drug trade and keeping it concealed account more for its low crime rate than "guns."

Plano is a suburb of high murder rate Dallas; one of the most dangerous cities in the world.

If Guns are the reason for low murder rates, why the disparity between Plano and Dallas?

By the way, the other "safest cities' happen to be in states with high levels of gun control.

What the true title of the thread should be is...

Funny, I did not see one word about the NRA or gun manufacturers in the article. Although, that won't stop you and others from jumping off the cliff.

If the thread title needs adjustment it should be that "Legislator" wants, like the thread article. That legislator is not Texas.

So the NRA is doing what The National Cattleman's Beef Association and dozens of other beef associations do for beef? And what the American Dairy Associations does for milk? And the American Boatin Association does for boats?

Heaven forbid an association pushes and lobbies a product moder8 doesn't like!

Once again the [bleep] running around complaining about how Obama has stolen peoples wealth, and that people can't afford the essentials because of Obama, come up with a marketing scheme to encourage these very same people to spend their money not on the essentials they just claimed people couldn't afford --- but rather on a new pistol.

If it wasn't so mind numbingly stupid – it would be funny

"By the way, the other "safest cities' happen to be in states with high levels of gun control."

Not sure what you were looking at, but out of the list I look at, only two of the top ten safest cities were in states that impose heavy restrictions on private ownership of weapons.

But I don't think that matters. You could impose Mexican-style gun laws in Detroit and it's not going to make a difference. It's still going to look like Juarez. Trying to outlaw private ownership of weapons as a means of discouraging or preventing violent crime addresses a symptom as opposed to a the root cause. Like putting a Band-Aid on an infected wound.

Clearly this is a political ploy, intended to prove a point. Because with a few exceptions, there simply aren't any guns to buy-tax holiday or not.

**** Oddly the Greatest & Vilest Criminals in America are NOW the Gun Owners...and not the US Govt "War Mongers" or their evil cronies the "Banksters"...who are together the same ones who have actively and persistently Raped & Pillaged the USA and many foreign countries under the Bush & Obama Administrations! How many innocent people around the world did private American gun owners MURDER...or Bankrupt...compared to the Bush and Obama Regimes?

"Safest city in America: Plano"

not that i'm for gun control in anyway that the politicians are feeding it to us because i'm not.

but affluent newtown had less less murders than affluent plano... it just takes one entitled sociopath who has access to guns, even though not allowed to purchase themself, to turn those numbers right around and make plano feel the darkness that newtown felt.

nobody has a solution for that.
and nobody has a solution on how to remove illegal guns off the streets.
