Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, February 26, 2013

Under an assault-weapons ban that advanced late last week in the Maryland General Assembly, experts say the gun would be illegal in the state where it is produced. Now Beretta is weighing whether the rifle line, and perhaps the company itself, should stay in a place increasingly hostile toward its products. Its iconic 9mm pistol -- carried by every U.S. soldier and scores of police departments -- would also be banned with its high capacity, 13-bullet magazine. "Why expand in a place where the people who built the gun couldn't buy it?" said Jeffrey Reh, general counsel for Beretta.

Concern that the company will leave, and take its 300 jobs with it, is palpable among state lawmakers who worry it could be collateral damage from Gov. Martin O'Malley's proposed gun-control bill.

Beretta has been around for almost 500 years... I'm sure they will be fine.

Beretta USA is a subsidiary of the Italian Fabbrica d'Armi Pietro Beretta - anyone want to take odds on them having been in the market for a while, looking to relocate to a so-called "right to work" state with cheap goober labor?

state with cheap goober labor?---> Kneejerk statement!

As opposed to overpriced union goober labor?

As opposed to well compensated labor in a worker friendly environment? Yes.

"in the market for awhile" - yeah, since the blunderbuss.

This isn't about unions, this is about Maryland's gun control measure. Beretta moved some warehousing to Virginia in the past in a dispute with Maryland. There's no reason to believe they won't do the same with manufacturing. 500 jobs in southern Maryland - gone.

Do you have anything that would indicated Beretta is intending to move because of right-to-work, Doc, or are you just dialing up the deflect-o-meter to 11 this morning?

Does the phrase "anyone want to take odds on..." indicate I possess information on that score? It's a suggestion, that's all, not even a deflection. Here's another suggestion: tell your optometrist you need a new prescription.

Jeez, sounds like slave labor! I'm sure the people that get laid off when they move out of Prince George's county will be glad to see them go.

You're losing it.

Nobody said working at the corp. is "slave labor."

My speculation - and it was clearly stated as such (although the point whizzed right through the part in the middle of your noggin) - was linked to the suggestion (from one of the company's lawyers no less) that fueled the possibility of the operation moving out of Maryland (as you state in the headline you've posted).

Tell your optometrist it's an emergency.

Nor did I claim that was the case. Maybe we can both go set up optometrist appointments?

I truly hope every gun manufacture moves out of these liberal states and take their money with them. If you want to ban guns then you liberals can do without the jobs and tax money from them as well. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

Mississippi or Arkansas ought to work out pretty well - both have minimum wage rates lower than Maryland's.

Posting it out of order doesn't prove you're right. My statement in #8 does not refer to anyone else's assertion that working at Beretta is slave labor. Now, had I referred to it as "cheap goober labor" you might have something, but I didn't...which means you're pissing into the wind.

F*ck the Peoples Republic of Maryland. They don't care if Beretta leaves or not. Heck, they don't really understand economics anyway.

The sad part is that 500 people might lose their jobs unless they're willing to follow Beretta out. On the other hand, it's just a short drive down 301 and across the Nice bridge to Virginia. I'm sure the nice folks that live around NWS Dahlgren and Fort AP Hill won't mind a nice gun manufacturer moving in.

No, this article demonstrates the absolute stupidity of those who like to chant "states' rights" as if they have nothing to fear from the politicians who run their state (i.e., the same one eventually go to Washington)..

#25 | Posted by ChiefTutMoses at 2013-02-26 04:21 PM | Reply | Flag:

The tea[...]s like to protest and use federally funded parks to rail against federally funded parks while they sip on their federally funded sugar beverage picked up when they filled their federally funded work vehicles with federally funded gas subsidies.

Now the above is funny, but what's even funnier is if the federal government cut any of the above enumerated subsidies they claim is an infringement on their wealth, the tea[...]s would be the first ones out demanding the government do something about the high cost of gas, and soda, and the need for a public space for them to whine and cry at.

This article has that same humorous quality to it. The people who habitually insist states and state politicians can do no wrong to them are now at the front of the line complaining about how a state is doing them wrong.

You are confusing States rights with stupid legislation. Two different things.

Beretta should move and find a nice welcome home. Perhaps a home with fewer taxes as well.

The partisan hacks in the legilature can do/vote any way they want to. And Baretta can likelwise move thier butts down the road to a friendlier environment. And while they are at it I'm guessing they will set things up in such a way to increase thier financial prosperity. I just hope that the politicians who cause this mess end up paying the price for running businesses out of the State for purely political reasons. But more likely, the Maryland legislature will back door even more taxes to make up the difference and then claim that it was a good deal for all.

I truly wish that the federal government could pull all spending that goes towards infrastructure in red states. Since conservatives are so against government spending, you should go without the jobs and money that such spending brings. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

"You are confusing States rights with stupid legislation. Two different things."

Back in the old days, like when conservatives actually conserved something --- this was called "Extortion" by people of integrity.

I think you are confusing a business holding a state hostage over the state exercising its right to protect its citizens with some ideological driven cartoon that is playing in your head.

But the question that is never answered by the "States Rights" [...] is (as this article brings to the forefront); who is going to protect you from the state when, as you say, it crafts stupid legislation.

That's the question every fox parroting, platitude spewing, bumper sticker solution couch potato needs to ask themselves before the next time they throw that platitude around as a fix all.

It is kind of odd that businesses would run for purely political reasons, but it's their money.

If they keep spending what we don't have, we will all do without such spending one day.

Too many assume it is the government that provides us with wealth and without government spending we all would be doomed. I'm not against government spending at all. I'm against deficit government spending that never ends.

#33 | Posted by sames1 at 2013-02-26 07:26 PM | Reply | Flag:

I strongly support the need for union private sector labor to offset the abusive greed and avarice of the over class and global corporations.

That said, if Maryland is stupid enough to cut the throats of industry in their state Beretta should move to Constitution friendly state. Money talks, especially to politicians.

You bet! And a good way to shrink the deficits would be to stop spending on red states that hate spending.

You might be on to something. Red states can just keep their own tax dollars and resources and will have to make due. No more Red State tax dollars on bailouts for New York bankers or purchasing of Union voting blocks in Micigan to name a few.

Since Red states already receive more federal money then they contribute per capita, fine with me.

That would work but, you'll have to stop the influx of the gimme stuff types into the big cities of the red states, as they are eating up tax revenues at an alarming rate. This is what causes some red states to consume more than they produce. It's just a matter of time before the infection that destroyed the states they are fleeing from to infect the state they are running to.

How is the business holding the State hostage? The State is free to do as it wishes. SO is the Business. How is it the Businesses problem if the States' action motivate it to leave?
