Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, February 25, 2013

"Watching the Oscars last night meant sitting through a series of crudely sexist antics led by a scrubby, self-satisfied Seth MacFarlane," wrote culture bible The New Yorker.

"...the evening's misogyny involved a specific hostility to women in the workplace… It was unattractive and sour."

A sketch with Ted provoked some of the harshest criticism. The bear said his real name was Theodore Shapiro, adding: "I would like to donate money to Israel and continue to work in Hollywood forever. Thank you."

The ADL found this "offensive and not remotely funny."

"It only reinforces stereotypes which legitimize anti-Semitism. It is sad and disheartening that the Oscars awards show sought to use anti-Jewish stereotypes for laughs," said ADL national director in the US, Abraham Foxman.

"..when one considers the global audience of the Oscars of upwards of two billion people, there's a much higher potential for the ‘Jews control Hollywood' myth to be accepted as fact."

Okay, fine, it was a cheap comment.

But he has borrowed a lot from old sitcoms, even the Simpsons. He's not ripping anything off, he's just rehashing a lot, albeit in a clever way, and he ties in a lot of old movies as well.

Movies which I'm sure a lot of the younger viewers have never seen and don't pick up on.

Either way, I'm a fan of his comedy, but not a fan of his obsession with musicals.

Indeed. Many sketch comics do--and that's what he is, a sketch comic disguised as a sitcom writer.

The problem with racist or misogynist or anti-semitic jokes which are funny is that they do reinforce negative perceptions of targeted groups on either a conscious or unconscious level. I thought McFarlane was hysterical. I also thought most of what made him so funny was inappropriate and should not be broadcast at the Oscar ceremonies. Jokes about Rihanna and Chris Brown are side splitters, but they make a joke out of domestic violence. Not cool in this type of mass culture broadcast. Etc.

He started off as the Sportsguy on KROQ's Kevin & Bean Show here in LA, successfully pitched the "Man Show" to Comedy Central with Adam Carolla (his roommate at the time and also a Kevin & Bean contributor) and pitched his late night show to ABC, who liked it and started airing it after Nightline.

I would have thought the Oscar producers/executives would agree with you until I heard McFarland was hired to host the Oscars. That's when I determined that they think it's perfectly ok to offer jokes like that in such a mass culture broadcast. If they didn't think it's OK, then why in the hell would they hire McFarland in the first place? Especially when the Academy had to consider McFarland's movie 'Ted' not even a year ago. They were fully aware of his comedic type, yet went along with it anyways? They got what they asked for, IMO.

I just get tired of the professional victim hood and whining in this country over every perceived offense. The fake apologies people have to make to the outrage pimps gets old too.

Seth McFarlane makes jokes for a living [...]. Comedy is SUPPOSED to be edgy, it's supposed to mock our stereotpyes as well as our accepted standards. Most importantly, it's supposed to make us slightly uncomfortable, as it's merely an exaggeration of reality.

Seth McFarlane didn't plant a bomb or tell the audience to kill (insert stereotype here). He told jokes. JOKES. Get hold of yourselves, folks.

Family Guy doesn't copy or imitate anybody. Whoever says that doesn't know anything.

FG makes fun of absolutely everyone. Gays, feminists, Christians, Jews, Muslims, business people, conservatives, cancer victims, the mentally retarded, women, men, metrosexuals. I appreciate it when celebrities come on the show and are themselves. It's hysterical.

I hated the show at first, then my son got me watching, and I noticed a lot of things that were very funny, but he didn't know it because he doesn't have 40 years of watching TV and movies, as I do. Stewie Griffin is probably one of the best characters in TV history, and it's an iconic show, but it's an acquired taste.

The FG parody of Star Wars was tears-down-your-face funny, where Stewie playing the part of Darth Vader asks why there's a big hole in the Death Star that if you just dropped a bomb down it would blow the whole thing up. And then their parody of Return of the Jedi, where it happened again. "Woh. That sounds serious. Can't you just put some boards down, some plywood?"

Pure genius.

Godalmighty. Some posters here just like being deliberately stupid.

I actually didn't know Macfarlane was hosting until after the fact. Still wouldn't have watched it, but there's nobody in all of Hollywood who is better than punching all the right buttons. Nobody in the history of the human experience is more self-celebrating than the Hollywood crowd, and Macfarlane has built a pretty good career ripping all of that apart, every Sunday night. It was like asking Larry David to host the Emmy's or something, but even that isn't an apt comparison.

It's hypocritical to laugh at a joke about Christians, then get up and angrily switch off the channel and run over to bitch about it on Facebook and on Drudge when he makes fun of the "Jews run Hollywood" canard. He needs such people, though. Congratulations, Tor. You're the guy. And all the studio execs realizing this morning--Godalmighty, the ratings were great, all 4 hours. They talked about it for days after. Bring him back next year." And so they probably will.

A few of Seth MacFarlane's jokes were edgy but the Oscars hosting gig requires like 300 jokes. You don't ask MacFarlane to do that job without expecting him to go over the line a few times to figure out where it is.

MacFarlane's a weird mix of crass and old Hollywood. He's an exceptional crooner, and nobody works blue humor on network TV like he does.

I wouldn't mind seeing MacFarlane get the Oscars hosting gig again.

FG's schtick was worn out awhile ago (although it may have changed; haven't seen it in awhile).

"Bob's Burgers" has the potential to be this generation's "Simpsons", I think. Jon Benjamin is hilarious. Several members of the same crew were responsible for "Home Movies".
