Steve Lopez: If you're like me, your mailbox is getting stuffed with political mailers. What to do? ... If you live in Los Angeles and it seems like you're getting more of this junk than ever, it's because millions of dollars are being spent by committees to either support or demolish candidates for City Council, mayor and school board. Not only for mailers, of course, but also for equally vapid and nasty TV ads. This is how democracy works, courtesy of the U.S. Supreme Court, which lifted limits on so-called independent expenditures, thereby turning elections into cash-driven free-for-alls in which candidates are almost beside the point.

Take the current campaigns for seats on the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education. Three spots are up for grabs, but this is less an election than a local skirmish in a national war that's raging over control of public schools. In the current battle, the local teachers' union and its allies are taking on the "reformers" and their supporters, some of whom live far, far from Los Angeles.

I kept hearing last week from readers who were having conniptions over New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's $1-million donation to the local Coalition for School Reform. They said he should mind his own business, and they called this another example of an attempt by rich guys to privatize public schools, or at least turn them over to their charter school cronies.

Actually, it was Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa who helped shake down Bloomberg.

As a resident of New Jersey, a cigarette smoker, a junk food aficionado and a farter, I assure you Bloomberg is in favor of freedom.

Bloomberg sucks, but its those tools at the Supremely Corporate Court that are responsible. Most of those tools were appointed by Republican douchebags, btw.

What's fair for the Koch brothers is fair for Bloomberg.

Money corrupts and so have many who own the media. Bloomberg wants to disarm law abiding common folk; he wants to welcome more illegals and amnesty to further divide and bankrupt the country; more gang members and drugs to justify expanding police presence; a permanent squad of NYPD police providing for his own taxpayer funded security; while sending NYPD Swat teams to beat up peaceful demonstrators who question the corporate and Wall St ethics.

He and his billionaire ilk represent a significant causal factor to much that has led our nation, the corruption and indebtedness, and what has gone wrong with America where the few get much richer and the nation goes to pot. We have been dumbed down and "oligarched" by the media and most are now too poor and clueless or partisan to be aware.

Bloomberg has been dumping millions of dollars into the Illinois 2nd congressional district race too.

The 2nd district is the one formerly held by Jessie Jackson Jr.

Bloomberg is backing a candidate that has an anti gun agenda. His money has funded a bunch of television commercials, and volunteers going door to door with handouts.

I don't live in the 2nd, but I really hope the people there vote for any other candidate, just to send the message to these out of state douche bags, that the elections aren't for sale.

No mail in the box is a great thing (no bills, debts, BS, fish (like Bologna Shrimp (BS)), and no politics (LIES), etc).

Haven't had the nice empty mailbox experience near as much though since getting married. Junk mail sucks - so I just let the 2nd in command take care of it. So after all that junk I usually have no mail on the desk to be concerned about.

Of course its a lot more "work" to keep it that way. At least the criminal political stuff is an automatic-trashing.

Just in case you you don't think that radical "progressives' are totallyruining our education system...Of course, if you listen to Doc and Prag, these are all "isolated incidents"and are not evidence that kids are being indoctrinated. We already know that Head Start is useless as far as any real education and is just a way to get hold of kids at an earlier age but NOW Barackus Caesar wants a program to get them even earlier. Beam me up, Scotty!

Got anything to say about the Bloomberg/LA situation there, Jesty?

He seems to be in favor of non-public options... Maybe you should think before you post?
