Argo stormed to Best Picture victory at the Oscars on Sunday on a night of surprises. Jennifer Lawrence was named Best Actress for playing a feisty young widow in comedy Silver Linings Playbook tripping up on her Dior dress while was going up on the stage. Daniel Day-Lewis, won Best Actor for Lincoln as expected, made Oscar history and won a long standing ovation on becoming the first man to win three Best Actor Oscars.

First time host Seth MacFarlane, 39, pushed the envelope with cheeky songs like "We Saw Your Boobs" about actresses who have stripped down for movie roles, and jokes about Hollywood's large Jewish and gay communities.

I liked Argo... especially the part where I didn't recognize the CIA guy as Ben Affleck until the credits, lol.

Lincoln was a monster of a movie, boldly daring to try to cover complicated Congressional legislation as it did.

Apparently nothing much has changed in that process.

Lincoln was awesome. A must see. If it is competing with Argo for best picture then I guess I must see it too.

Are there any intelligent people still watching the Oscars?

#4 | Posted by matsop at 2013-02-24 05:41 PM | Reply | Flag:

The only ones in the running I've seen are Django and Zero Dark Thirty, and I can't see either of them winning much.

Argo sounds like it might be good.

I can't see Argo winning on its movie making strength. Its a great story yet entirely predictable movie, right down to the cop cars chasing the plane to the end of the runway, yet just barely missing it. I haven't seen any of the others, except Beasts of the Southern Wild, a shockingly honest portrayal of a small segment of American Society.

Salley Fields escape from Iran in "Not without my Daughter" was drama of the highest order. Great actress.

I might even watch tonight... haven't seen the show for about 20 years.

Is it still 16 hours long?

If these are what qualify for the summit of our film art, the depreciation of the dollar is a far less threat.

Hilarious. Typical critic who never saw the movies.

Lincoln was great but I predict Argo wins Best Pic, DD Lewis for Best Actor. Didn't see Les Mis or Silver Linings Playbook, but that's probably the 2 that Best Actress, and the Supportings will come from. And Spielberg for Best Director.

#10 | Posted by Harry_Powell at 2013-02-24 09:57 PM | Reply | Flag:

OK, didn't know Waltz had already won. Probably won't see Quentin's latest blood-fest.

.... Spielberg's Winning Formula!

**** Daniel Day-Lewis is Hollywood's "old reliable" when they need an extremely hollow and pedantic actor to add some feigned gravitas to an even more mediocre & lackluster movie!

Sure, because My Left Foot, Gangs of New York, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln cry out for "an extremely hollow and pedantic actor"

Let me guess, you're still upset Bruce Willis hasn't been nominated, right?

"Argo sounds like it might be good."

Just saw it yesterday - not bad at all - a little veering off to what almost looked like "The In-Laws" (the classic Alan Arkin-Peter Faulk film, not the latter-day drivel) towards the end, but, still, good enough.

Haven't seen "Lincoln." I think it's my bias about a lot of what Spielberg does; it's weird, hard to explain, but when I watch one of his films I'm for some reason constantly reminded I'm watching a movie.

I've heard "Loopers" is good and "Cabin in the Woods" a great homage to the horror film, so if anyone has anything about those please drop it in the hopper.

#19 | Posted by Doc_Sarvis at 2013-02-25 06:19 AM | Reply | Flag:

I confess. I watched it for the first time in years with my wife (she watches it every year). Seth McFarlane was over the top irreverent, often in questionable taste and very funny.
It was too long but a good show.
Saw "Argo" a while back and can't argue with its selection. I especially enjoyed the whacked out Hollywood scenes with Alan Arkin and John Goodman.
Also worth seeing:
Halle Berry
Jennifer Lawrence
Charlese Therone (sp?)

Okay, Anti, I'll bite. Name five excellent actors who have appeared in popular films. If you think Day-Lewis is hollow and pedantic (he does like diction), who do you think is good?

#21 | Posted by pragmatist at 2013-02-25 08:46 AM | Reply | Flag:

Argo is a great movie. Daniel Day-Lewis is terrific in Lincoln in a movie with a bunch of great performances. I was glad Quentin Tarantino won for his Django Unchained script. That's a fantastic movie, as long as you can get over the astonishing level of violence.

Seth McFarlane had some nice moments as Oscar host, but I was expecting more. I liked the occasional crass joke, but the I-will-be-a-disaster monologue was way too long.

So now, the political manipulators have figured out how to present propaganda and win oscars with it. I saw lincoln. It was boring and typical hollywood trype. DDL, as usual, overacted. It's one of those movies that is made to preach to the choir.

"the political manipulators have figured out how to present propaganda and win oscars with it"

Corporate-produced spectacles dominate the culture. Bread and circuses. The Super Bowl is a militaristic propaganda feast with commercials...and a football game squeezed in during propaganda breaks. And then there is the "state of the union" which is about anything but, but replete with stage-managed pathos and bathos and dying children and partisan war dances, etc.

Yep, that's another one. But at least they are honest. The drivers wear their corporate logos, unlike the political hacks at the "State of the Union."

Oh, and we want to thank Steven Spielberg for being jewish.

Can you ever engage on a topic without resorting to Obama-bashing, even in jest? It's kind of sad. No, it's really sad.

"The drivers wear their corporate logos, unlike the political hacks at the "State of the Union.""

Wasn't there a movie where senators had to wear the logos of their corporate "sponsors," or am I making that up? Would be great indeed.

Matsop's about as fixated on Obama as a person can get. And not in a good way. I think he needs to check the "use-by" entry on his prescription bottles.

May I make a suggestion: How about Bozo the Clown outfits for members participating in sessions of the Senate and House, complete with Carrot Top wigs and red rubber noses that squeak?

"REVEALED: Military Members Used as Props by Michelle Obama During Oscars Were Blinking Coded Messages

Three of the four military personnel were, according to a computer-based analysis, using Morse code to signal the public that they were being forced to appear as props against their will.

• One male service member appears to have signaled: E-X-T-R-E-M-E P-A-I-N S-T-O-P

• A female service member repeatedly blinked: P-L-E-A-S-E S-E-N-D R-E-S-C-U-E P-A-R-T-Y S-T-O-P

• And another serviceman signaled: S-H-E N-E-E-D-S H-E-R O-W-N D-A-M-N V-A-R-I-E-T-Y S-H-O-W M-A-K-E I-T S-T-O-P

The use of military members for the First Lady's commercial appearance raised the specter of impropriety according to Beltway insiders.

Longtime Hollywood insider Sparkles Malloy observed that, "if the Obamas really want to break the record for most television appearances, they ought to at least move to Los Angeles."

How is it you are allowed to spam every thread with garbage, copy and paste, posts?

Do you ever think for yourself or do you wait every morning for your new set of talking points?

Based on your posting history I would assume the latter.

By the way, any new racist Obama emails from your Tea Party brethren?
