Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, February 23, 2013

A violent 12-car crash at the end of the Nationwide NASCAR race Saturday sent a tire and other debris flying over the grandstand fence at Daytona International Speedway, injuring at least 28 fans, some critically. Deadspin has video of a fan who was filming a few seats from where the tire landed. More from Reuters.

Tire? Whole darned engine and front end ended up on the wrong side of the fencing.

Yeah but Larsen will get a ton more airtime over the next few days, weeks and years.

Okay. I really didn't mean that pun. Honest.

What I want to know, is why Regan chose to f*^ck it up? He had it in the bag.

Figures.

Ironic that it's a blood sport the fans go to in hopes of seeing a driver die in flames and all the drivers are fine.

Nothing like a smoking hot engine smacking into your lap. I mean...... nothing.

Tomorrow the real carnage begins. Danna should kick some ass.

It's not ironic. The cars are designed to go to pieces to distribute the energy of the crash away from the driver's cage and give the best chance of survival.

People watch for the racing, but we makes our money from the crash videos.

What is your point? NASCAR has crashes at almost every race, but the last driver fatality in the top level of the sport was Dale Earnhardt Sr. in 2001.

History is full of examples. I believe they cancelled the Le Mans race in the 50s or 60s because a car went of the track and bbq'd a bunch of fans. I'm willing to bet death due to alcohol overconsumption is more common than either.

Seems like the fans should be situated inside the track. That why they aren't quite so much in the path of the inevitable crash. A car's turning, then it comes apart, those pieces go straight... this math may be too complicated for some...

For a while there I didn't think Danica was ever going to learn the difference between an open wheel and a stock car but she seems to be moving along nicely, thanks to the tutelage of Dale Jr. and Tony Stewart.

She's one gutsy gal.

BTW, I hope you all watch the 500 today.

LOL.
Now that's funny right there.
You've never been to the track and watched a race before, have you?
Aside from that, how many millions of miles of racing would you speculate has been run where the fans were not injured by flying debris? Your suggestion harkens me back to the short bus gun ban debates. Your logical process is cute to watch unfold but unlike a preschooler, you could actually do some real damage to the world around you.

SNOOFY made a ridiculous statement.

I'd only like to point out that if this wreck had occurred in 2001, Kyle Larson probably be dead. [ i.e. Dale Earnhardt Sr. - Dayton 500 in 2001]

NASCAR has spared no expense in improving the safety factors during a race, especially in the areas of equipment that the drivers are required to use and the safer barriers that now line the entire outside walls of every track where NASCAR races.

This was a freak accident and, short of cutting off the view of the spectators (which would have caused a revolt considering the price of a ticket) NASCAR has done everything humanly possible to prevent injuries . . . not only for the drivers but for the spectators, crews, track maintenance and first responders.

I'm sorry some spectators got injured. I was there and one of them could have been me. No one celebrated after the race. Drivers may be fierce competitors but they all realize the risk of restrictor plate racing at a super speedway. They're professionals first and foremost and they accept the fact that sometimes bad thing can happen.

They'll be back out there this afternoon racing just as fast and just as hard as ever. And I'll be there to cheer them on.

You would think that drivers going around the same circle for hours would get good at it after awhile not worse.

#25 | Posted by fwthom at 2013-02-24 10:29 AM | Reply | Flag:

FWTHOM

There are so many people in racing's social circle that can intelligently discuss the intricacies and the makeup of a race ~ specifically the highly engineered car itself ~ that the opinions of someone, such as yourself, looking in from the outside ~ couldn't possibly be any less moot.

My guess is you wouldn't last more than 10 seconds behind the wheel before you killed someone.

SNOOFY made a ridiculous statement.

How so? When stuff is flying around in a circle and it breaks loose, you're safer inside that circle than out. That's physics.

Your suggestion harkens me back to the short bus gun ban debates.

What suggestion? I didn't make a suggestion. I made an observation.

They can design their tracks any way they please. Put the spectators over top of the track looking down if they want. I truly do not care. But I'm not so thick as to pretend the spectators aren't in the debris path of a crash. Sure, they take steps to keep the debris from intruding into the stands... because spectators are in its path.

Until NASCAR can prove that fans are not ever at risk, they need shut down. It is not that complicated. Profits and money for the promoters and drivers should never EVER be allowed to be equated with lost lives of fans.

Already flirting with that with NASCAR suppressing fan footage of the crash.

#31 | Posted by snoofy at 2013-02-24 11:38 PM | Reply | Flag:

The irony here is that many fans go to/ watch daytona and talledaga to see the almost guaranteed multi-vehicle crash. They even call it "the big one". Just turns out the "big one" turned out to be an interactive experience for some of them.
NASCAR knows this and has even made some tracks worse to pass on to increase the number of crashes.

Snoofy - the inside of the track already has all the fans they can fit without blocking the view of the track for the rest. Until they can make people and things transparent, sitting outside the track (or football field or baseball diamond) is the only practical thing to do.

Feinstein should introduce a bill banning all big, loud cars that have the capability of injuring many people at one time. Civilians do not need access to be big, loud, scary cars. When will the gubbermint protect us from these killing machines??
