Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The New York Police Department is building a team whose sole mission is tracking down stolen iPhones and iPads with a helping hand from Apple, according to a report.

The new squad of iCops, first reported by the New York Post, will work with Apple to find the thousands of Apple devices lifted every year.

Apple devices are an increasingly popular target of thieves -- 3,890 more Apple products were stolen in New York City in 2012 than in 2011. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg went so far as to blame iDevice theft for a 3.3% increase in city crime in 2012 compared the previous year during a December interview.

"We're looking for ways to find individuals who have stolen Apple products and return the products to their original owners," NYPD spokesman Paul Browne told the Post, adding that 74% of stolen Apple devices find their way home.

I smell Nanny Bloomberg's hand in this. Stolen iPhones are MUCH more important than real crimes like rape, assault and murder. We await further announcements about new NYPD teams to investigate Big Gulps and trans fat fried food.

Yeah, riiiight... when a call comes in to the NYPD, the 911 operator will say "Rape? Murder? Sorry citizen, we are only handling the Apple account now. Please call back if the rapist or murderer steals an I-phone.

What a ridiculous pretense.

Sneeze Zakck, yer brains are dusty.

No my point is a very simple one, why make a team and spend money going after stolen apple junk, verses taking that money to go after the more violent crimes plaguing NY so much more.

Instead of investing more time and money into stopping more violet crimes they are taking that man power and money going after apple products.

The NYPD is, I'm sure, grateful for your concern. Your resentment that the NYPD investigates property crime is noted.

How do police forces 'prevent' violent crime?

I'monna go with the assumption that they wont be dropping charges on violent felons to clear their schedules for Ipod investigations.

Why do you jump to cartoon conclusions about a police effort to recover stolen and easily trackable personal property?

Protecting private property and investigation thefts is an entirely appropriate response for a big city Police Department.

Are you in the stolen I-products field?

I know I've read lately that crime is way down in NY so apparently they are doing something right.

"Stolen iPhones are MUCH more important than real crimes like rape, assault and murder."

I doubt you'll get anybody to say that seriously. But what is true is that iTheft is easier to solve than rape, assault and murder. Especially when you can track a phone's location if it's powered up. When sound bite statistics are how you defend your tough on crime credentials, you definitely focus on crimes like these. Even more so when you needd a good deflection from your more controversial crime fighting techniques. Like Stop and Frisk.

The headline stinks. There has been no stopage of investigation of violent crime.

As hag mentioned, I smell easy wins in this.

The stolen goods are trackable, making these thieves easy targets.

So if they didn't go after these easy wins wouldn't that be sort of unfair to those who were the victims of these thieves. In all liklihood Apple products are not the only things these thieves have stolen, probably other stolen goods are located and returned to victims as well.

Certainly. Which is why using the location of a known stolen good is an easy way to look tough on crime and catch some criminals in the meantime.

It would seem to me that if the cops didn't go where they know stolen goods are located and instead went out to look for criminals it would be sort of stupid.
