Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, February 21, 2013

As the big names of the movie industry tackle that all-important question of what to wear to the Oscar ceremony on Sunday, there is one group of people who are still waiting for their invitation. Why do stunt men and women not have an Oscar category? "It's disheartening because you've put your life and blood through it," said Jack Gill, who has been setting himself on fire and crashing cars in the cause of entertainment since the 1970s. "When I got Steven Spielberg and Jim Cameron and [Arnold] Schwarzenegger and those guys signing a petition; once I took that into the Academy, I thought they would see that all of these eminent people really believe that we deserve this."

Because movies centered on stunts are usually not very good?

They'll expect to be paid more. Once Steven gets his $400 million a year, and the Tom Hanks of the world lock down their $30 million a picture contract, there's not much left for the little people.

There's also no oscar for movie trailers.

Or best closing credit font.

Because someone else would have to accept the Oscar for them.

They're lucky their names are on the closing credits. Why not an Oscar for Best Gaffer? They don't give awards to the canvas or the paper the book is printed on, they give awards to the artists.

I've never spent much time in school, but I've taught ladies plenty. It's true I hire my body out for pay -- hey, hey!

Yah, right? A lot of times the trailer makes the movie look a whole lot better than it is.

It probably depends entirely upon how many Dominoes delivery cars are destroyed during the climax. Stunt people are in the film, doing the often difficult and dangerous acting that the dialogue actors cannot/shouldn't perform. It's probably a good piece of the special effects adding suspension of belief - therefore very pertinent to the rest of the acting, if not integral.

Way back in the glory days of Hollywood, there was an Oscar for Best Title.

I'm not sure stuntmen have a guild. Without out, they cannot qualify to open a new category.

At least stunt people get their frkn' names in the credits. Not so the musicians in 99% of movies. The caterer gets credit, the animal caretakers get credit, even the Teamster drivers get credit for their amazing talent of being able to pick up the director at his hotel on time. But not the amazing session players or the sax soloist who made the scene work.
