Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Thanks to Hollywood and NPR's foreign correspondents, most of us think we have a good idea of how each country's military works. China is scary, the U.S. patrols the world, the Middle Eastern countries only have armies big enough to fight each other, and everyone else just keeps the guns around for parades.

But there are some countries that never turn up in war movies or video games that you still wouldn't want to mess with. For instance ...

Glad they included Canada. The Canadians have always acquitted themselves well in war but do not seem to get credit for it. Hell, one of their guys got the Red Baron!
But they have always kept their military modern and well trained. God help anyone who thinks of invading that giant country. We tried twice. Got our butts kicked, too.

And Australia is another one that does not get enough recognition.

"Hell, one of their guys got the Red Baron!"

Well, Roy Brown or Aussie ground troops. I don't think that was ever sorted out.

I had no idea the Swiss have their road infrastructure wired... that's kinda cool.

How could Canada not be considered bad ass?

They served with honor in both world wars likely have WMD's that they're wise not to admit to and can buy just about any military equipment they want from the USA in under 24 hours for a song.

Why?

Because we like Canada.

"Ask a pot smoker, Federalist."

And then ask yourself when was the last time Canada had a full blown revolution?

Revolutions happen daily in Canada, in their toilets. It's a country blessed by a remarkable series of civil transitions without violence. The worst I ever heard of up there was the St. Patrick's Day riot about the suspension of a Montreal hockey star.

I have a friend who is half Irish and half Pathan (from Pak).

He is known as the master of his corner of London and everyone is clueless of what he might do next. One second he is brilliant, a second later he turns into a football-hooligan kind of lunatic.

Such creatures should only exist in nightmares.

"The Canadians have always acquitted themselves well in war but do not seem to get credit for it. Hell, one of their guys got the Red Baron!"

Unlikely.

Controversy and contradictory hypotheses continue to surround the identity of the person who fired the shot that actually killed Richthofen.

The RAF credited [Canadian Arthur Roy] Brown with shooting down the Red Baron, but it is now generally agreed that the bullet that hit Richthofen was fired by someone on the ground.[45][51] Richthofen died following an extremely serious and inevitably fatal chest wound from a single bullet, penetrating from the right armpit and resurfacing next to the left nipple. Brown's attack was from above and the left. Even more conclusively, Richthofen could not have continued his pursuit of May for as long as he did (up to two minutes) had this wound come from Brown's guns.[45] Brown himself never spoke much about what happened that day, claiming, "There is no point in me commenting, as the evidence is already out there".

Many sources, including a 1998 article by Geoffrey Miller, a physician and historian of military medicine, and a 2003 U.S. Public Broadcasting Service documentary, have suggested that Sergeant Cedric Popkin was the person most likely to have killed Richthofen.[45][51] Popkin was an anti-aircraft (AA) machine gunner with the Australian 24th Machine Gun Company, and was using a Vickers gun. He fired at Richthofen's aircraft on two occasions: first as the Baron was heading straight at his position, and then at long range from the right. Given the nature of Richthofen's wounds, Popkin was in a position to fire the fatal shot, when the pilot passed him for a second time, on the right.[45][51] Some confusion has been caused by a letter that Popkin wrote, in 1935, to an Australian official historian. It stated Popkin's belief that he had fired the fatal shot as Richthofen flew straight at his position. However, in the latter respect, Popkin was incorrect: the bullet that caused the Baron's death came from the side (see above).

A 2002 Discovery Channel documentary suggests that Gunner W. J. "Snowy" Evans, a Lewis machine gunner with the 53rd Battery, 14th Field Artillery Brigade, Royal Australian Artillery is likely to have killed von Richthofen.[46] However, Miller and the PBS documentary dismiss this theory, because of the angle from which Evans fired at Richthofen.[45][51]

Other sources have suggested that Gunner Robert Buie (also of the 53rd Battery) may have fired the fatal shot. There is little support for this theory.[45][51] Nevertheless, in 2007, a municipality in Sydney recognised Buie as the man who shot down Richthofen, placing a plaque near Buie's former home.[52] Buie, who died in 1964, has never been officially recognised in any other way.

The commanding officer of No. 3 Squadron AFC, Major David Blake, initially suggested that Richthofen had been killed by the crew of one of his squadron's R.E.8s, which had also fought members of Richthofen's unit that afternoon. This claim was quickly discounted (if only because of the time factor) and withdrawn. Following an autopsy that he witnessed, Blake became a strong proponent of the view that an AA machine gunner had killed Richthofen.

The war of 1812 was with Great Britain. They had not yet given the blessing to a new country North of the border, nor would they until Canadians said 'please' in 1867.
