Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The Chevrolet SS, a new, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan, has been unveiled at the Daytona International Speedway. MotorAuthority writes, "The new Chevy SS is just an update of the previous Pontiac G8, but the changes are significant enough to almost warrant this a brand new car. We're just happy Chevy is selling a rear-wheel-drive sedan in the U.S. for the first time in 17 years."

Is this the blandest, cheapest, generic looking piece of crap you have ever seen? No wonder Chevy and other American car makers cant compete putting out junk like this. And they dont even have the forsight to offer this car in a manual. Who wants a "muscle" car without a manual transmission?

Another FAIL.

You are right abut the manual, Alabama. If it is a muscle car, you gotta have that bad boy stick option.

Wife & I have not bought an automatic for decades.

Not gonna either.

Just drove down to South Padre and back in my little 5-speed Ford Focus.
Handled the 85 MPH stretch of Texas 130 just fine and averaged 38 MPG for the whole trip with three POB and luggage with the AC on (February!!). But then Ford didn't need a bail out.

Recommended restaurants: Rosie's in Cuero and The Hanging Tree in Goliad.

Unfortunately that is something that is going away. Even the manuals, especially import, are getting away from allowing you to slam through the gears instead opting for automatic manuals with paddle shifters and those are just not as much fun. However it is nice to see this from Chevy finally, hopefully fomoco will follow suit and give us a RWD ecoboost powered sedan or non-juvenile coupe.

I hate the paddle shifters too. You cant get the same effect unless you are pushing in a clutch and slamming the gears. The torque doesn't feel the same...

We don't have American carmakers in America. We have retirement homes with a money-losing auto subsidiary. The only way GM and Chrysler are still in business at all is because the American government has chucked billions of dollars in toward their "rescue".

Legacy costs have doomed the automakers, just as they will soon enough to the government that pretended to save them.

Honda and Toyota are more American made hands down then GM,Ford or Chrysler. Those that seem to think otherwise, someone explain to me why GM exported a entire plant to china and then made the US workers go and train their replacements in 2012.

One thing I have learned is to never judge the look of a car by its picture.

When I see one then i'll decide.

I laugh when American car manufacturers compare the technology in their vechicles to high performance aircraft.
If the space shuttle was built to their specs it would blow up everytime it lit its engines, it wouldn't get 2 inches off the pad.

Mostly because there isn't much of a market for them. Seems like most are going with double clutch electronic shifted trannies these days.

Have to disagree Boaz, had stick all my life finally got tired of it in traffic. The LS3 with 6speed auto is great.

#15 | Posted by patron at 2013-02-20 01:50 AM | Reply | Flag:

The stick has gone the way of the Dodo because most drivers don't have a free hand to shift with anymore. Some don't even have a free hand to steer.

I've been shopping for some kind of German sports coupe and even with the models that have the manual stick option, very few dealers will actually have one in stock.

I don't care for Porsche or BMW so they may have them since I haven't looked. Mercedes and Audi, not so much.

A: No. The restructured GM is still based in Detroit and is still one-third owned by the U.S. government. But it sells nearly as many cars in China as in the U.S. and has continued expanding operations there."

Performance for the 1968 Hurst/Olds (390 hp): 0–60 in 5.4 sec, 1/4 mile in 13.9 sec @ 103 mph (166 km/h).[7]

en.wikipedia.org

Peak output of the Chevy SS will be slightly lower, registering at 415 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque versus the Camaro SS' 426 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque.

Nevertheless, the auto ‘box offers an aggressive 3.27 final-drive ratio, which means the big sports sedan will be able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in about five seconds--making it one of the quickest four-doors on the market.

Ugly designs doomed american automakers. Designing-by-committee ruined american automakers. PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE ruined american automakers.

Why would I buy american when japanese or german (and now korean) cars last longer and look better? If they built better products they'd sell more cars and be able to cover their "legacy costs". The only legacy cost they can't afford is the cost of having a boardroom full of the same old white cowards who are afraid of bold decisions or even trying anything new.

That slanted chevy ribbon logo is a stamp of shame. They should ditch it and start over.

Funny, I always defined a muscle car as by the high performance engine. I have been in many smooth shifting cars that are as far from a muscle car as can be.

Only an idiot would prefer a stick to a dual-clutch automatic. You've got the option of controlling the shift yourself with the paddles, or you can let the computer handle it.

Now, the article doesn't say if this is a dual-clutch or a torque converter automatic, and yes, for performance a stick can still beat a torque converter.

But you've really got to be a moron to want a stick if it's a dual-clutch.

"Only an idiot would prefer a stick to a dual-clutch automatic."

No, people who enjoy driving do. A paddle shifter may be faster but you remove the direct link to the car. If it were not so then manually controlling an automatic would be just as good. But there is no feeling like dumping a clutch and then ripping through gears.

I have had muscle cars trucks and high performance cars. You are straight up on crack if you think a manual floor shifter is better than a beemer with paddle shifters- I had the 2007 335i. You can do 160 mph in that car and it is as dead quiet as it is at 20 mph. Any American car with a floor shifter, yeah you may get off the line quick or even run a fine quarter mile, but oh baby- that German Engineering is were the big boys play.

The VW people got it right in that it is the {driving experience/enjoyment}. The very reason to downshift and power through a sharp curve instead of breaking around it like 90% of drivers :

Fahrvergnügen (German pronunciation: [ˈfaːɐ̯.fɛɐ̯ˌɡnyːɡn̩]) was an advertising slogan used by the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen in a 1990 U.S. ad campaign. That German term means "driving enjoyment" in English (from fahren, "to drive," and Vergnügen, "enjoyment").

Anti-lock brakes irk me (greatly) because they get in the way of my braking on a slippery surface. I like good old-fashioned brake pumping; it's how I was taught to drive, and it has always worked for me. Now, I slide more if I happen to hit a patch of slush or ice that defeats my tires. The brakes may not lock, but the system appears to lock me into a slide.

It's using the Pontiac G8 platform? That bodes well for this car. The G8 was the BMW that Pontiac always wanted to build. It's a terrific sports sedan. It speaks to GM's general incompetence that it took so long to repackage such a strong platform.
