Pistorius: I Thought I Shot an Intruder

Arrested for shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp to death in the early morning on Valentine's Day, Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius told the court that it was an accident caused by his mistaken belief that an intruder had broken into his home. Pistorius said he thought she was sleeping beside him when he got up, grabbed the 9mm pistol he kept at his bedside, yelled at a suspected intruder in the bathroom and fired several shots through its door. Steenkamp was hit four times and died. "I fired shots at the toilet door and shouted to Reeva to phone the police," Pistorius said in a statement submitted by his attorneys. "When I reached the bed, I realized that Reeva was not in bed. That is when it dawned on me that it could have been Reeva who was in the toilet."

"I heard a noise in the bathroom and realised that someone was in the bathroom. I felt a sense of terror rushing over me. I believed that someone had entered my house."

The thought of his girlfriend using the bathroom didn't enter his mind?

"I battled to get her out of the toilet and pulled her into the bathroom. I phoned Johan Stander ("Stander") who was involved in the administration of the estate and asked him to phone the ambulance."

He called somebody to phone an ambulance for him?

"With the benefit of hindsight I believe that Reeva went to the toilet when I went out on the balcony to bring the fan in."

A life sentence for either murder or utter stupidity.

Because Pistorius is lying.

I think he is too, though we'll see what other evidence emerges. His statement seems like an effort to concoct a defense for the indefensible.

Why did she have the bathroom door locked? She was sleeping with the guy, she got up in the night to take a leak. Why lock the door? Afraid he might stumple in on her? I smell a South African O.J.

He might have mistaken her for an inflatable latex love doll. Seems his taste extends to similar things.
The latest reports say they found steroid type drugs all over the place after the shooting. That is my pet suspicion about the OJ-Nicolle case, that he was doing roids but it could not be a valid defense in court.

he broke the number one rule of shooting. never shoot a target unless you 100% sure of what and/or who you are shooting at. you never ever shoot at an unidentified target.

The woman was taking a crap and got shot. That's got to suck. Put this guy in jail if for nothing more than being stupid.

That is often said, but rarely applied, even by law enforcement who are supposed to be trained professionals. Such as LAPD mistaking hispanic grandma paperboy and her daughter for a 270-pound black man. Will the officers face criminal charges? No, maybe lose their jobs--at best. For a home invasion, the intruder is not going to wait for 100% target identification. Which places you at a tactical disadvantage, they have the element of surprise and will shoot fast. So, you die. My state of RI is anti-gun, if I shoot an intruder in self defense, I will face an uphill battle to keep from going to prison.

Why does the media force us to pay all of this attention to these people? Lock him up and put him on trial with no bail just as they would for any other individual accused of shooting and killing his wife.
