Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Politico: President Barack Obama is a master at limiting, shaping and manipulating media coverage of himself and his White House. "The way the president's availability to the press has shrunk in the last two years is a disgrace," said ABC News White House reporter Ann Compton, who has covered every president back to Gerald R. Ford. "The president's day-to-day policy development -- on immigration, on guns -- is almost totally opaque to the reporters trying to do a responsible job of covering it. There are no readouts from big meetings he has with people from the outside, and many of them aren't even on his schedule. This is different from every president I covered. This White House goes to extreme lengths to keep the press away."

Conservatives assume a cozy relationship between this White House and the reporters who cover it. Wrong. Many reporters find Obama himself strangely fearful of talking with them and often aloof and cocky when he does. They find his staff needlessly stingy with information and thin-skinned about any tough coverage. He gets more-favorable-than-not coverage because many staffers are fearful of talking to reporters, even anonymously, and some reporters inevitably worry access or the chance of a presidential interview will decrease if they get in the face of this White House.

They are also masters of scrutiny avoidance. The president has not granted an interview to print reporters at The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, POLITICO and others in years. These are the reporters who are often most likely to ask tough, unpredictable questions.

If you couldn't nail Obama for being a Marxist, a Communist, a Kenyan, a Muslim, or even Baby-Sacrificing Satan Worshipper (not making that up), then why would you hope that not doing enough press conferences would do him in?

That must be why he keeps kicking us in our behinds, because it sure as shootin' can't be our stoopid ideas and lack of innovative thinking, let alone our rude, crude, and mindless opposition that appeals to loons.

This President is finding that speaking directly to the American people, as he is doing right now, is a better way of communicating with them than trusting the media to filter what he says. Remember this is the same media which has continuously played the game of false equivalencies on just about every issue that Republicans have obstructed. At least the President shows up for work, the House leadership has managed to limit the House's actual work schedule to just 8 days during the first month of the new session. We face the sequester and they are on vacation.

ZED this is not Fox, the Weekly Standard, or the Daily Caller. This is the Politico who has been having a love fest with Obama from day one. This is not about him being a Marxist, a Communist, a Kenyan, or even a Muslim but about "the most transparent White House in history" controlling their message. Honestly ask yourself if a republican administration could have gotten away with any of the things this administration has?

Isn't that against the law or something? I mean - well, I never - what other POTUS ever tried to do anything like that? Isn't there something in the Constitution about this - next to the part that talks about the Air Force?

I wonder just what it is these self-styled "conservatives" think the job description of "White House Director of Communications" entails.

Oh, wait, the WH pt it on their website: "The Communications Department crafts the message that the President delivers to the country" (The Communications Department crafts the message that the President delivers to the country).

Wow, what a revelation!

Take off the blinders and admit it, benthos....this administration said they would be transparent ever and have instead become the most secretive ever. Where is Sam Donaldson when we need him (not that he would be allowed to ask questions)?

Obama is more to the Center than I am. It was interesting to see him describe himself as being right of center.

I can live with that. I don't have to be happy with all of it, but I I can live with that.

Liberal Bias Central to Obama Media Edge

Politico writers Jim Vandehei and Mike Allen are on to something with their feature published today about President Obama's mastery of the mainstream media.

No matter how smart the strategies employed by the White House, the president's ability to skate through four years without getting seriously challenged by the mainstream media would not have been possible if most of those being played were not willing accomplices. Due credit must be given to the administration's ability to take advantage of technology as well as their brilliant if unscrupulous game playing with journalists. But without the liberal bias of most of the mainstream outlets that let the president play them like a piano, he would come across as a bully and a demagogue rather than the reasonable nice guy seen in those "60 Minutes" interviews he loves to give.

But, as Politico rightly points out, they have doubled down on it by limiting access to the working press -- even those from generally friendly liberal outlets -- and going directly to the public via social media and White House-created content. That has been combined with cleverly staged leaks to journalists who then dutifully do the administration's dirty work for it on a host of issues.

You nailed it on the head, the press doesn't have access to actually ask good touggh questions, obama does everything on social media because it will be all softball questions.

The authoritarian liberals are just being hypocrits here, they continue to slash at bush for softball questions and now defend the enept obama here.

It is a disgrace, and both sides of the aisle know it.
