A female Alabama lawmaker said her state needs tougher restrictions on abortion clinics because a fetus is the "largest organ" in a pregnant woman's body. State Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin, a Republican, made the statement to justify a law she proposed to regulate the state's five abortion clinics like surgical clinics. "When a physician removes a child from a woman, that is the largest organ in a body," McClurkin, a married mother of three with three grandchildren, told the Montgomery Advertiser. "That's a big thing. That's a big surgery. You don't have any other organs in your body that are bigger than that." A fetus is not an organ. Even if it was, it wouldn't be the largest in the body.
