A female Alabama lawmaker said her state needs tougher restrictions on abortion clinics because a fetus is the "largest organ" in a pregnant woman's body. State Rep. Mary Sue McClurkin, a Republican, made the statement to justify a law she proposed to regulate the state's five abortion clinics like surgical clinics. "When a physician removes a child from a woman, that is the largest organ in a body," McClurkin, a married mother of three with three grandchildren, told the Montgomery Advertiser. "That's a big thing. That's a big surgery. You don't have any other organs in your body that are bigger than that." A fetus is not an organ. Even if it was, it wouldn't be the largest in the body.

They breed them with the extra stupid chromosome.

And even if it were - it wouldn't be the largest organ in the body.

Also correct. This woman fails on so many levels that her status as a GOP star is guaranteed.

I hear she's on the short list of Republican Presidential hopefuls for 2016.

That's generally accepted but not necessarily true if the skin is really an organ "system" and not a true organ.

That is why I stated "internal".

#13 | Posted by schmanch at 2013-02-19 09:36 AM | Reply | Flag:

Why would you make an assumption, Mats, that is counter to scientific fact and terminology? "Organ" has a specific meaning. A fetus is not an organ any more than the brain is a muscle.

We can argue, logically, about when a fetus is considered a "life." We can't argue, logically, about whether or not a fetus is an organ. Depending on when in the pregnancy the abortion occurs, it can be a big surgery, so maybe in context she had some larger (pun intended) point, but by using the word "organ," she looks pretty dumb. And she should look that dumb to anyone who cares about using words for what they actually mean, ideology be damned. If some lefty or Dem spoke this way, I'd criticize that person, too. (And yes, the guy who said the Guam thing appears to be downright stupid.)

Prag, read carefully the author of the thread. I'm not making the assumption, the author is through his hyperbole----"even if it were-it wouldn't be the largest organ in the body". If a fetus were an organ his assumption puts him potentially in the same category as the person he is critical of.

15: Please, Mats.

"'When a physician removes a child from a woman, that is the largest organ in a body,' McClurkin, a married mother of three with three grandchildren, told the Montgomery Advertiser last week. 'That's a big thing. That's a big surgery. You don't have any other organs in your body that are bigger than that.'"

She said it is the largest organ in the body, unless you're asserting that the author misused quotes or outright lied, and that's a big assumption to make based on nothing.

Okay, so I'll accept that your accepting the assumption, which is still nonsense. You seem to be defending the lawmaker. Why? Or are you just trolling the critics? You're better than that, Mats. Except for your random personal attacks on me of the last month or so. But hey, I've got a thick organ system known as skin.

Yeah, that comment was metaphorical. The audience at the time knew it was metaphorical. The speaker went on after the fact to say that it was metaphorical. The context of the remark suggests that it was metaphorical (the speaker went on to talk about environmental impacts).

Likewise, even were it not metaphorical, do you not feel a little pathetic trotting this example out over and over again in the face of much more frequent and serious errors on much more pressing and serious topics by your ideological fellow travelers? Do you, perhaps, enjoy looking foolish?

And one of the DR Tea Party Representatives chimes in to further humiliate himself and the party.

First, there is no provisionally accepted hypothesis that a fetus in an organ, except in the Tea Party community.

Second, our skin in the largest organ, this is accepted by real scientists.

But as you and Eddie keep demonstrating, the Tea Party has no use for facts or science when they have faith.
