Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, February 20, 2013

It seems some in the state of New Hampshire have that winter itch for snow underfoot, frosty air in their lungs, and the rush of downhill skiing. The state's House is voting this week whether lawmakers should get free ski passes for Cannon Mountain. A one-day lift ticket costs $70 for an adult and the bill allows unlimited free access. The majority of the Legislative Administration Committee is recommending killing the bill.

Things like this are tantamount to legislative abuse of power.

It seems the supporters of this legislation are taking the "live free" part of their state slogan very seriously. I have a staunch intuition that they do not take the second part of the slogan quite as seriously.

The second part happens when they hit a tree.

They say skiing at Cannon doesn't add costs to the ski area

If that's true, then just let everyone in for free.

Lift ticket prices are just one more lousy consequence of the financialization of our economy. One of many. The driving principal is to reduce taxes and consume all those savings and more in debt service. You don't have to play, but it is a trap most people get stuck in.

Interesting:

"Members [of the NH house of reps] are paid a salary of $200 per biennium, as are New Hampshire state senators."

(No, I'm not saying they should therefore get free tickets anywhere, just noting.)

I'd also consider promoting skeet skiing where these "legislators" romp. What a serious waste of government time and obvious abuses of power. I'm guessing this is an all Republican bill..

If there was no personal gain, they would not beg to get elected.
