Leaked draft legislation authored by the White House would be used as a backup proposal should negotiations fail in Congress over comprehensive immigration reform, administration officials said. "Let's make sure that that group up there, the 'Gang of Eight,' makes the good progress on these efforts as much as they say they want to," White House Chief of Staff Dennis McDonough said.

Under the plan, the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants could become legal permanent residents within eight years, applying for a newly created "Lawful Prospective Immigrant" visa in the meantime. The plan also would provide more security funding and require business owners to check the immigration status of new hires within four years.

"Among its particulars, if passed, would be the creation of a "Lawful Prospective Immigrant" status, that could be applied for by the nation's estimated 11 million undocumented residents. The new visa would allow its holders to legally live and work in the United States, as well as leave the country for short periods of time. After eight years visa holders who passed the program would be allowed to apply for full citizenship.

Earlier this month Democratic Gang of Eight members Sen. Richard Durbin and Sen Bob Menendez indicated the group was weighing similar a proposal that would extend the wait to 10 years. But Saturday a leading Republican in the group, Sen. Marco Rubio, immediately lambasted the White House version as "dead on arrival" in Congress."

Nice move to put pressure on Congress to git 'er done.

Using Plan B for Immigration? Well it would cut it down but how will they convince all those latina mamas to take it?

The plan B is usually less radical than a plan A. I shudder to think what that is considering how foolish the second one sounds.

The first thing that has to happen is the borders secured. If you are naive you would believe they are more secure than ever but that is not true. The laws already on the books are not enforced as per the administration. Here is a novel idea, why not enforce the laws that are already on hte books? Then we can simply modify them as needed. Naw, wait that would make too much sense.

Re #1 - "Nice move to put pressure on Congress to git 'er done."

You mean to destroy our republic? Just hand out citizenship like candy because these poor people illegally entered or stayed in our country.

The bill is doomed to be as meaningless as Reagan's 1983 Immigration Bill. It is amnesty and it was never enforced systematically anyway. Case in point, Mohamad and Malvo were released from INS custody in Washington State after being picked up for shooting guns in their backyard. They were illegals from Jamaica. Everyone should be welcomed as tourists. But, it is outrageous, unpatriotic and illegal to permit foriegn workers in this country when real unemployment is between 15-22%. Humphrey-Hawkins is the law of the land, and being deliberately ignored by both stinking parties. The official policy of the US Government and US Global Corporations is to lower the standard of living of our country. To speak to that issue, however, is to be banned from both major parties.

Whats funny is all the "accidental" leaks this Administration has, how about the files on Fast and Furious, his list of requirements to kill Americans without trial for starters.

It's leaked to the USA Today and then the minion talks about on the Sunday show--lol

You can't make this [...] up.

No citizenship for 15-20 years. Back of the line.

And what the heck are they going to do about the other half that overstay their visas and never leave?

How does this work?

Back of the line folks... but....they get to stay here and enjoy living in the country while legal folks are stuck in their respective countries. Totally fair I see.

The White House has been leaking all over the American public for years now.
