Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) called for a citywide ban on plastic-foam packaging used for coffee cups and food containers as part of a new recycling effort he hopes to implement before he leaves office. The mayor likened the dangers of plastic-foam packaging to lead paint, insisting it puts the city's environmental future at risk. "Something that we know is environmentally destructive and that may be hazardous to our health, that is costing taxpayers money and that we can easily do without, and is something that should go the way of lead paint," Bloomberg said. "We can live without it, we may live longer without it, and the doggie bag and the coffee cup will survive just fine."

I swear, by my life and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.

Styrofoam just makes everything taste better. Not even a close call.

I hate Styrofoam and I always try to avoid any place that uses it. Seems that I remember a long time ago McDonald's used Styrofoam and were forced to drop it by public demand. That is the way this should work. Michael Bloomberg is building a nanny state and I guess New Yorker's no longer have the ability to think for themselves so they need Michael Bloomberg to think for them.

Well from how I see it this will cost business even more money and many in NY are mom and pop that dont have a franchise to rely on. I am sure he will come up with additional tax for those that dont comply.

Nanny state always turns into a military state.

Styrofoam makes a good soil amendment, decreasing soil density. Manufacturing styrofoam uses less energy and generates less waste than paper mills. The most environmemtally friendly packaging system is not a slam dunk. It all depends on how the waste stream is managed.

Interesting...

Personally, I don't think he is off base with this. Unlike some of his other 'issues'. I just threw out a couple garbage bags of Styrofoam because recycling won't take it.

I eat at McDonald's all over the world. If you get a large drink, they all serve them in styrofoam cups.

Nothing better than two McD's bacon egg & cheese biscuits and a large iced tea, served in a styrofoam cup. Paradise.

Styrofoam can be recycled and used in other ways quite easily. Why not push for those efforts rather than banning substances such as this?

#7, I have never heard that, but if true that is a very good point.
