Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs
Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Rep. David Dreier, one of California's most influential Republicans in Congress and the chairman of the House Rules Committee, announced Wednesday that he won't be running for re-election. The state's first-ever citizen-drawn political map put him into a politically inhospitable district. Dreier shared the news on the House floor, where he cited Congress' "abysmally low approval rating" and said, "The American people are asking for change in Congress."

I always thought he and Barney Frank had a thing going.... guess not.

Sounds as if Frank gave him at least a wink and a nod.

Dreier, a bachelor, was passed over for a GOP leadership position in a controversial decision in 2005 that some observers speculated had to do with questions about his sexuality. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), who is openly gay, was asked if Dreier was passed over because he was too "moderate."

"Yes, in the sense that I marched in the moderate pride parade last summer and went to a moderate bar," Frank famously responded, adding that he had no knowledge of his sexuality.

That said, as the article cited immediately above points out, "[h]is decision has been long expected due to a redistricting process leaving him without an obvious district to run in."

Too bad Moderates Repubs, gay or otherwise, have no place in their Party these days.

Hell of a state of affairs when a guy like Goldwater would probably be drummed out of the Gasping Old Party - he abhorred the introduction religion into political discussion.

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."

You are 100% correct Corkster, then again, moderate Dem also no longer have a place in the Dem party either. That IS the problem, both parties, over the past 20ish yrs, have purged any/all moderation from themselves. Both Dems & GOP alike. "We the people" are left with nothing but extreems. But hey, for those of you in the "anything to get a win, party over country", it prolly sounds like a good idea.

Moderate Dems aren't dropping like flies. (unfortunately)

Snowe and now Dreier and it's only Wednesday. There may not even be enough in office to last to the weekend.

Dreier is a great American!

The redistricting of CA is a joke.

They redrew the lines along racial communities mainly. It appears worse than it was before and that's hard to do.

Bob Filner decided not to run--his old district looked like a fishing pole--no sense. Now they have the mountains to divide San Diego and El Centro.

BTW, he's running for San Diego mayor and will lose to our gay DA, Bonnie. She appears to be the early favorite. First thing she did in office as DA was pay the gays 1 million dollars to drop the Boy Scouts lawsuit.

Wonder how she will do as mayor?

Glad I live in the county and not the city limits.

The map was citizen drawn, not done by some self-serving, crooked legislators, like in Texas.

You hate democracy much?

The public, instead of political hacks, redrew the lines. Why do you hate democracy, McAnkles?
