The Stop Trading On Congressional Knowledge, or STOCK Act, would prohibit Members of Congress and their aids from profiting from inside information they might obtain through their official duties. But the House Financial Services Committee, which appeared to be set to fast track the bill, abruptly canceled plans to vote on it. "We were taken completely by surprise...stunned is more like it," Slaughter told WGRZ-TV. The bill was pulled at the behest of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.

The No. 2 House Republican on Thursday defended his request to indefinitely delay a committee vote on the legislation, saying the issue needs to be approached "in a deliberate manner."

"This is an issue of extreme import for the confidence of the public toward this institution," Cantor said on the House floor.

A Cantor spokesman also told politico.com that a large group of bipartisan members of the committee felt the legislation was flawed and being recklessly moved solely in response to media pressure.

"Oh, .. for goodness sakes!" replied Slaughter. "Last week we passed a bill worth hundreds of billions of dollars with a less than a two day layover and no one knew what was in it. This bill has been around for 6 years!"

Figures that a bill requiring a tiny bit of ethics would be shut down by a Rethuglicanoid!

"Suddenly Slaughter's bill to got 219 co sponsors-- a majority of the house--and a number almost unheard of."

I guess no one thought ahead and realized how damaging it would be to their political careers (and wallets) when it was revealed how widespread the insider trading was on Capitol Hill. It appears Cantor is a hero albeit a soon to be unemployed hero.

It's obvious that people that choose politics as a career are inherently untrustworthy and it's time to bring the system up to the 21st century. All political figures need to be held to a higher standard. Their families as well. I'm not beyond bringing back public humiliation and the old "tar and feather" treatment for these low life's that game the system under the guise they are bettering our country.

Any person holding a political office and their families should by law have very limited access and extremely transparent to the markets and other personal financial dealings.

Makes me wonder what shape this country would be in if only poor people ran it.

So bribery not only exists but the fuckers refuse to stop now that we've caught them. It means the US government is so corrupt its rotten to the core.

And notice that its already so bad over 1/2 the prisoners in jail are actually there for exercising inalienable rights rather than any violation of anyone else's rights. Hmmmmm who's the criminal? THE GOVERNMENT!

And fuck-back that apology there...

I'm amazed how many on DR believe EVERYTHING they read and 1/2 what they see on TV. Let those idiots tie their brains in knots till they figure it out. I think they'll eventually get it. Funny how some people don't seem to develop that sense till they're over-exposed to someone who practices sarcasm constantly (or an ordinary (min-moderated) blog).

The insider trading scam pisses me off more than probably ANY other corruption I have ever heard of in Washington. It is literally almost un-F-ing-be-LIEVABLE that these sons of bitching scoundrel bastards could possibly go this far.

Don't get me wrong. I have always been 100% positive that lying political hack cronies were dealing on their info. How the hell else could each one of them become an instant millionaire 3 seconds after he's elected? But to actually have exempted themselves from the law is beyond belief. Some law professor stated at a hearing that Congressional insider trading is already illegal under existing law. Yea?? So I wonder why NO Washington insider has ever been indicted??

FUCK Cantor, Pelosi, Boehner, Spencer Bachus, and the rest!! These bums need to be thrown out on their asses.

And VERNON 1 -- get real. It's political hacks regardless of party. All politics sucks!

Because they can't prove it, dummy.

How are you going to prove that Mr Bigshot stood at the urinal next to me and told me that when this new bill is rubber stamped, then buy as much Acme stock as i can?

Do I open my posts to you with greetings like... "blah blah blah moron."??

My query was tongue-in-cheek.

I know goddamned full well why there have been no indictments. Jesus.

Somehow your rational that the WHOLE of Government is to blame does not jive with this statement from the article:

"Suddenly Slaughter's bill to got 219 co sponsors-- a majority of the house--and a number almost unheard of."

It seems that the Rotten Apples, are fewer, but more evil and more
powerful than previously perceived...

Eric Cantor is a Spoiled Rich Frat Boy who hasn't worked an honest
days worth of labor in his life...I've been saying it for 4 years now...maybe now a few people will start to sit up and listen...

There remains little doubt though Reitze, that government is in need
of a "rooting out process"...too many are corrupt...

WTF are all the teabaggers? Where is their outrage? This is a constitutional issue (in the spirit of ther law as well as the letter of the law).

Why are the right-wingers not going bezerk over this issue?

I though they fancied themselves law-and-order types. I suppose that only counts when they are talking about non-wasps.

Whoever said that Cantor will soon be unemployed is delusional. He doesn't even run ads in his own district. If there is an R next to the name, that lever is getting pulled. He has no chance of losing, unless another R decides to run against him. As a result, he is the perfect leader to do the dirty work for the GOP.

This is horrible. WE should definitely reduce those lazy no good teachers salaries and benefits and increase the retirement age because of this.

#24 | Posted by donnerboy at 2011-12-12 01:07 PM | Reply | Flag:

This should have been expected. Who really anticipated congress to police themselves when it comes to money?

We set our expectations too high....or maybe that's a mark against the system?

American politics doesn't need voter box stuffing or other voter fraud (like what's happened in Russia) to maintain the plutocratic status quo. American politics and those in power have the system set exactly the way they want it. Whether its a (D) or an (R) next to the pol's name you're voting for - which ever lever you pull is a vote against your own self interest. Perfect system for the 1%.

Don't thank Bush or Obama - thank Teddy Roosevelt who created the Progressive Party, then buried it in 1916 - the last real chance at a third party candidate.

Imagine that. A retard calling someone else a retard. Of the 10 richest congressmen/women 7 are Democrats and the 3 Republicans are not even Tea Party people.

Fucking liberal whiners still cant except their own short comings. No wonder they suffer from penis envy.
