Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

The party's greatest challenge, operatives and elected officials in both parties say, is keeping the conservative base energized without overshooting the mainstream and driving away the moderate "Brown independents" they'll need to take back Congress.

And a new poll from Daily Kos shows how hard that's going to be.

I heard this this morning and was going to post a thread. The numbers were stunningly high. Anger, acutely hostile, and for what legitimate reason? This poll matches my experience with my GOP acquaintances, unfortunately. There is a sizable gap between reality and their created "belief system."

The Cry [cut that] Whine of the Loons

A poll from the Daily Cooze? These results are so unexpected.

The GOP deserves, and rightly so, any and all consternation it gets from voters.

WTF?

This was 'supposed' to be the party of fiscal conservatism - the party of limited governance. Yet, when they had the reigns, they were only slightly less-bad than the Dems!

Fuck them!

But at the same time, let's look at recent history. The GOP, in off-year elections, re-took governorship of 2 blue states. Going further, the GOP wrangled the vaunted Ted Kennedy seat in the Mass. legislature from a Dem!!!
*That seat was supposed to be sacred!*

Currently - we have deficits that should make Danni blush. We have a fiercely partisan electorate that can't get shit done; despite huge majorities in both houses.

All the GOP needs to do is be 'obstructionist' BUT, at the same time, offer some kind of vision for the future. Thus far, they have failed on the latter. However, if they can successfuly do that - we may be looking at a '94-redux.

"Thirty-nine percent of Republicans polled think Obama should be impeached, 36 percent say he wasn't born in the United States and one in four say they aren't even sure he's a U.S. citizen. Another 63 percent labeled the president a "socialist."

That's okay.

One in every ten people you meet daily think Elvis is still alive.

Eighty three percent think a Palin/Prejean ticket would be just peachy.

The GOP, in off-year elections, re-took governorship of 2 blue states.

I think voters are tired of the status quo and will vote in whoever promises to be different. The next few years are going to be interesting I think with swings back in forth as people attempt to change government to represent them instead of corporate interests.

The SCOTUS ruling is going to directly oppose this sentiment as unlimited corporate spending will make it harder for a reformer to gain notoriety.

In the end we will end up with the status quo despite promises otherwise and more and more independent voters will lose faith in the process leaving elections to be decided by die hard party loyalists.

The Teabaggers were supposed to be the solution, but they are being overtaken by the people who are part of the problem, not the solution.

The status quo will prevail.

High deficits, outsourcing, corporate welfare.

Sounds to me like this poll is perilous for the Democrats, not for Republicans.

All the GOP needs to do is be 'obstructionist'

When you look at the polls the public think the GNOP obstructionists are the reason things are not getting done.

That does not bode well for voters that are fed up with inaction.

Sounds to me like this poll is perilous for the Democrats, not for Republicans.

Not really. The article states that is the position of the "base". The GNOP has to keep the base fired up, at the same time as courting independents.

Independents do not share in the same wackjob positions as the base.

Fire up the base = piss off independents.

Cater to independents = Piss of the base.

Fine line to walk or a lose lose scenario.

The next few years are going to be interesting I think with swings back in forth as people attempt to change government to represent them instead of corporate interests.

that should read....."as people attempt to convice voters they represent them instead of corporate interests

doesn't mean they will though. The American Voter has been playing the role of Charlie Brown for a century or more and politicians are playing the role of Lucy with the Football.

I concur. Like I said, we get the song and dance about them being "mavericks" and "change" and we end up with the same old same old.

Looks like you can keep the base fired up by not having the name "Barack Obama". Tack on the fact that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and Byrd and Frank are writing GOP commercials for them, and I don't see much reason for the Repubs to be pessimistic about their political fortunes.

If the poll spells trouble for the pubs, why are they winning all the elections since congress started pushing socialized medicine?

BEcause OBAMA has gone and thrown his support behind all three candidates
new jersey
virginnia
massachusetts

and his record

O FOR THREE

And in other news:

GOP's Senate prospects on the rise

The long-shot bid by Republicans to retake control of the Senate is suddenly in play, as the prospect of high-profile Republican candidates entering the fray has pushed the GOP even or ahead in polling for 10 races.

washingtontimes.com

A new poll from Daily Kos? When do we get the Israel Acceptance poll from Hamas or the Obama popularity poll from an RNC core meeting?

If the economy turns around, I expect a major backlash against the Republicans come November.
