Canada Court: Gitmo Detainee's Rights Violated

In a 9-0 ruling, Canada's Supere Court found that Canada and the United States are violating Canadian Gitmo detainee Omar Khadr's right to life, liberty and security under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The court also denounced the use of sleep deprivation by his U.S. captors to soften up Khadr when he was a 15-year-old prisoner and the government's participation in his interrogation.

Stephen Harper's Conservative government's inaction on the Khadr case has endeared him to the xenophobic right in Canada but pretty much everybody else is calling shenanigans. The Supreme Court of Canada weighed in recently with a 9-0 decision that basically calls down both the Cdn and US governments role in the prosecution and imprisonment as having violated Khadr's civil rights.

Spud concurs.

The murder charge is total bullshit and needs to be thrown out. The "helping to build ieds" thing he needs to be prosecuted for but most people on the left in Canada think that time served (especially considering the extraordinary circumstances) is sufficient at this point.

Khadr is unique in that Canada has refused to seek extradition or repatriation despite the urgings of Amnesty International, UNICEF, the Canadian Bar Association and other prominent organisations.[10][11][12][13] In 2009, it was revealed that the government had spent over $1.3 million to ensure Khadr remained in Guantanamo.

In April 2009, the Federal Court of Canada ruled that the Charter of Rights and Freedoms made it obligatory for the government to immediately demand Khadr's return. After a hearing before the Court of Appeals produced the same result, the government announced they would argue their case before the Supreme Court of Canada.[15][16] In January 2010, the Supreme Court ruled that Khadr's constitutional rights had clearly been violated, but it stopped short of ordering the government to seek his return to Canada.[17]

ARob, considering Canada is The US number one trading partner by a wide margin and the US is far more dependent on Canada than the other way around I think the US is wise to consider Canada's opinion on their citizen's human rights. Also Canada is first in line with tapping Artic resources being made available by shrinking glaciers.

Canada is in far better shape than the US. Universal health care, better schools and lower taxes. The cities are on average much better than in the US as well.

Are the fumes in Jersey addling your brain? Or is it the poor quality of crack available in Trenton?
