Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

In the aftermath of last weeks earthquake in Haiti, the US government has sent Naval, Marine and Coast Guard personnel to that nation to assist in the rescue effort. Addionally, numerous Federal agencies have coordinated to send other forms of aid including rescue dogs, medicine and equipment. Further, more than ten million American tax dollars in recovery and rebuilding money is being sent to Haiti to help with the process.
Almost everyone would agree that private charities properly assist in these types of disasters. But how do all of you feel about have our Federal Government involved and spending our tax dollars in this manner?

I have been astounded by the amount anger expressed by some rightwingers that our tax dollars are going to assist these people in their hour most dire need.

My suspicion is that most rightwingers are too ashamed to acknowledge that their personal greed and selfishness extends to denying Federal emergency aid to suffering Haitians. Ideology is a bitch.

Yes, that's why I've sent them a check for $250 a week for the last two weeks.

Big difference between advocating solely private charity donations, and aid provided by the US government. Which is the point of this thread.

This is fine, however, I think that each time the Federal Government takes it upon itself to allocate aid to some foreign body, it should deduct that from any running total upon which they estimate the taxes on the citizens. If they want to spend it, that is fine, however they better not charge us for it.

I'm sorry, even I can't jump on board with that one. We do need to help these people and I do not have a problem with my tax dollars doing it, to a point.

We just don't want the gov going overboard and start doing stupid shit like they ALWAYS do.

On the other hand.

I watched hope for Haiti last night and donated 100 bucks. I am just so happy a liberal like Clooney organized this. Republicans all over have been saying fuck them. Republicans only see them as poor minorities that should be left to die. I guess liberals will have to do the heavy lifting as usual. If there is a hell you will find 99% of republicans there in the afterlife.

The problem is this.

We're not simply spending tax dollars.

We are spending debt dollars.

If ONLY we were simply spending tax dollars.

It would be easier to say yes.

Yes, that's why I've sent them a check for $250 a week for the last two weeks.

So? I've sent $1500.

I guess liberals will have to do the heavy lifting as usual.

Some things will never change.

Dems will balance the budget and the Cons will come along and turn it into massive deficits over and over again.

Did I hear that we (the Federal government) has given 3 billion to Haiti? And that the Haitian government (it's leader's) have stolen 800 then 300 milion dollars.

Oh wait here's a link:

I have plenty of compassion. However Haiti is not my country. I have donated funds (through my church) to help in Haiti. We, Americans, are the most generous nation but we are strapped financially. As #9 pointed out we are indebting ourselves to help. That is very short sighted and possible diasterous.

I would have used an established Charity, most likely your donation has gone towards a religious indoctrination program.

"I have been astounded by the amount anger expressed by some rightwingers that our tax dollars are going to assist these people in their hour most dire need."

Then you haven't been paying attention.

You should have seen that coming from miles away.

Ducks quack.
It's in their nature.

The people voting yes need to give privately.

"We just don't want the gov going overboard and start doing stupid shit like they ALWAYS do."

Perhaps if we make sure people like Paul Bremer stay far, far away from Haiti it won't turn into something like the amazingly corrupt Iraq REconstruction Fund. If I see pallets of cash being distributed without any documentation I will know he is there.

"The people voting yes need to give privately."

We do.

Fine the next time you go to a hospital just remember that quite a few hospitals would not be in existance were it not for Christians. No more St. Mary's, St. Vincient's, Methodist Hospital etc et al

Guess what, many missionaries teach those poor downtrodden people skills that they wouldn't have otherwise. My uncle in SC used to go to Hondorous and teach masonary skills to them. Did he talk to them about God and Jesus? Well duh that was certainly the point. Did he teach them to build schools and houses? Well duh that was also the point.

So get off your high horse about religion.
The 'Established Charity' that my church is using will see that 100% of the funds are used in Haiti. How you ask? Easy churches support the foundation that sends the missionaries so when they go for a specific purpose all the donations go for that purpose.
What percentage does your 'established charity' send to Haiti(in this case)? 80%? 50%? 20%?
