Drudge Retort: Red Meat for Yellow Dogs

The city of Dallas is taking a new approach to the world's oldest profession. Police treat prostitutes as sex crime victims, offering many a chance to clean up and get off the streets. "People think they are criminals, but they are victims," said advocate Karen Green, a former prostitute. "They've never had a break. They don't know what living right is."

At least Corky gets a tiny bed to rest in and access to free Massingill products.

Insane.

The only way police should be involved with prostitution at all is licensing, including the prosecution of unlicensed ones.

You legalize, regulate and tax, you create jobs and revenue. You protect public health by requiring STD testing and requiring condom use. You give sex workers a reasonable amount of dignity, and you make them less prone to victimization because a legal worker isn't afraid to speak up like an illegal one is.

If you made prostitutes legal, hundreds of millions of dollars could be flowing into local economies from their services.

Billions if they'll do anal.

In all seriousness, you have an excellent point.

While hardly a majority, the fact is that many women who engage in prostitution are victims. The impoverished teenage girl who runs away from home and the groping stepdad / the drug addict so deep in debt to her dealer that she is given no option / the (illegal) immigrant controlled and threatened by gangs/syndicates. I have no problem considering a subsection of prostitutes as victims in need of local government protection.

Just like the tea-baggers.

"In all seriousness, you have an excellent point."

Great, we could be on our way to economic prosperity just by subjugating women and forcing all into legalized prostitution.

America....a nation of pimps!

we could be on our way to economic prosperity just by subjugating women and forcing all into legalized prostitution.

Who said anything about forcing anyone into prostitution?

"Great, we could be on our way to economic prosperity just by subjugating women and forcing all into legalized prostitution."

Danni:

How is it subjugation if a woman makes a free, informed choice to pursue a job that requires licensing and health testing?

What we've got now, now that's subjugation - women being forced into prostitution because they owe their drug dealers or because they can't leave a pimp without risking their lives. Very few such women feel they can report their situations, much less escape them, because of the illegality of what they're doing.

You obviously have no experience of a regulated, legal brothel, where customers are screened before they ever get near a worker, and where workers are allowed to refuse service to anyone who creeps them out or is otherwise offensive. Where johns are required to wear condoms, and a lot of sex acts are not permitted because of risks to the worker.

Prostitution is not, in and of itself, subjugation. Only when women must ply the trade in secret are they at the kind of risk you're thinking about.

You make a compelling case.

I work nights and occasionally my job takes me into some rough areas of Detroit. The prostitutes are out in the streets, in the cold, oftentimes strung out on drugs, being harassed by cops AND are taking considerable risks to their own personal safety each time they are picked up a by a John.

A brothel seems a far better way to go. Of course, a brothel also has standards that its employees must meet as well.

Prostitution is legal in Amsterdam. The girls working in the Redlight district are independent contractors. They rent the room they use, and keep the rest of their earnings as profit.

They also have prostitutes that cater to people with disabilities, who wouldn't have access to sex normally.

Then again, on the other side of the world. Dubai to be exact.

Might be something to try at Congressional level!

Sounds like a really good program, though an even better program would be to legalize and regulate the "world's oldest profession."

Legalize it. Regulate it. Tax it. If nothing else, it gives a few unskilled workers a way to support themselves.

if you were a prostitute would you report your earnings

the myth of mental illness produces forced or coerced "treatment"/re-education. (drug courts, boot camps).

where are the real Libertarians when you need them! where are the real Conservatives, the classic Liberals!
(not to say that a hybrid civil/economic can't succeed, it can!)

there's one! hooray for Mary!

#16 if you were a prostitute would you report your earnings

huh? what's up with that attitude? why should anyone report their earnings?

""That's just how I dress," she said.", love that line.

Unskilled? That's not what I've heard. ;-)

"why should anyone report their earnings?"

That's one of the prime reasons for brothels. In that setting, it's a business, and it's much easier to detect who's reporting earnings and who's not. The individual worker gets an earnings statement like any other employee, of course. A brothel runs on a particular business model, and earnings reports that are very far outside that model will get scrutiny.

Street trade is another matter, of course, which is another one of the reasons why it should be outlawed. Prostitution isn't the problem. Putting defenseless women into the high-risk environment of the street, with no protection against pimps, drug dealers, violence and disease, is the problem.

You just love the sound of "tea bagger" coming out of your mouth. You sound like Beavis and Butthead. Tea bagger. Huh huh huh

Lipzoid is just mad because the price of a Rusty Trombone will go up if they tax it

Married women are mostly the ones against legal prostitution. I dont know any other way to put this but they might actually have to fuck their husbands to keep them home at night. Sex is the one thing that can destroy a man. Make it legal, it takes out the power of the pussy.
